when i went down the wide spiral staircase to our empty hallway, i heard my parents talk to the new apprentice from the other room. we didn't receive many visitors to our house, and i was an only child, so this was big news. as i opened the tall creaking wooden doors into our front entrance, i heard my father say, "that must be Lo,"
i looked up and saw him standing there with his big leather trunk and his worn sandals. "good to meet you Lo, i'm Abe" he said in his cheerful american accent, as he reached out to shake my hand. i shook his hand firmly and said "ciao Ape". he looked at my father, "she doesn't speak english, huh?". i then hopped off to the living room, hoping he might find me there later.
