I stared into the drab and lonely atmosphere, wishing I was some place else. Liam sat at my bedside, dried tears on his cheeks. I was on a drip. It was keeping me alive. Part of me wanted to rip it out from underneath my skin. What good was me being alive? I had a mum, who would probably forget me after a day or so anyway, a dad who I've never met, and no friends. I glanced around the white a grey furniture in my ward. I was sharing the room with four other patients, we were separated by a limp and colourless curtain. My eyes quickly wandered over to Liam, he was now staring at the floor, eyes wide and alert like a shining light. I sighed, knowing that a little part of Liam would probably care, he did take me here after all. And in good time, too. If we had come in just a minute later, I would be blind right now.
As soon as I got into the hospital, I was rushed into a hospital bed, and taken into an operating theatre. Liam had to wait behind, through anger and sadness. I was put out and had surgery on my eye. Well, actually behind my eye.
I came back to Planet Earth when a nurse came through the tangled curtains. I felt Liam's head raise.
'Mr. Styles?' She asked, obviously making sure she was in the right place.
'Yes,' I croaked.
'Could you please confirm your date of birth for me, please?' I heard Liam sigh.
'1st February 1994,' I jogged my memory, making sure I got the facts right.
'Ok, good. I'm just here to tell you what happened during the surgery.' She carried on, explaining all of the damages I had.
'Mr. Styles?' She was looking at me with a concerned look on her face. I looked over at Liam, as if he's tell me what I'd missed.
'Sorry, what was that?' Liam spoke, calmly but I could tell he was on edge.
I knew the nurse was getting bored. 'I said that you're going to have to stay here for at least a couple more days, to undergo a few more tests.' I nodded, indicating that I understood. She left, swiftly. Mine and Liam's eyes met, both with an emotion of fear inside.
'You did hear that - didn't you?!' He was first to break the silence.
'Hear what?' I wondered if he meant about the last bit that the nurse had said. I was wrong.
'Those bastards caused you internal bleeding. One if your blood vessels popped, and you nearly went blind!' He raised his voice a little to get his point across. I gasped. I didn't realise it was that serious.
'On top of that, they also have caused you many fractures you didn't even know you had.' He was nearly growling with emotion. Luckily, his phone buzzed before he could get angrier.
I sneaked a peak. I saw it was from Danielle, 'alright baby? I didn't see you leave school?xxxx'
He texted back almost straight after he'd read it. 'Sorry, sweetie. I'm in the hospital with a mate, I don't know if I'm in tomorrow. He's had to have surgery. I'll speak to you later - yeah?xxxx'
I squirmed in my bed, realising that everything the nurse said was true; I did have surgery, I did nearly go blind, Zayn really had caused all of this horror. I looked down at my bruised hands, cuts covered the limp and lifeless fingers.
I had a flashback of when I was walked on, earlier today. Zayn's laughter filled my ears. I shook my head, making the sounds flood out. I tried to focus on the flower pot; it was in the corner of the ward. The petals on the flower inside, looked dead.there were a few dead leaves and petals crowding the surface, forgotten and unwanted. That's exactly how I felt. As if Liam had read my mind, he looked up at me a sighed.
'You're going to get better, you know. Those stupid pricks will stop what they're doing to you, and you'll be good as new.' I winced at the words he chose to use but his puppy dog eyes made me realise that he wanted me safe.
'Why do you care?' It came out in the wrong tone, it almost made me sound like a spoilt child.
'I care because you're getting hurt - in every way imaginable, and it's time for it to stop!' He got up from his chair and sat down next to me on the bed.
'We'll sort this... Okay?' He stroked my hands, and for a moment I truly believed him. He smiled, a sympathetic smile, not one of his usual sunny smiles. I nodded as if to say 'I agree', I didn't have the guts to say it out loud. I groaned in pain, as I tried to move over to my side, so I was facing Liam completely.
'Here, let me help you,' he took my waist and quickly shuffled it the right way.
'Thanks,' I said, and I truly meant it.
It had just turned 10'oclock and Liam looked at his phone again. He gasped and sat up straight.
'Wont your mum or dad be worried where you are?'
'Umm, I don't have a dad, and my mum probably wouldn't care...' Liam's face dropped.
'I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-' I cut him off.
'No, it's okay, it's not your fault. You're right, I should probably text her.' I leaned over to where my trousers were crumpled up on the other side of the bed. I was wearing a hospital gown because of the surgery. I went through the pockets, desperately trying to find my phone. I texted her: 'Hey, I'm staying at a friend's house, don't worry about me.' I didn't really care if she read it or not, it wouldn't change anything. She wouldn't care that I was at home, or not.
