The bell rang, and Adaliah gathered up her books, dumping them in her backpack. Slinging her bag over her shoulder, she headed out of her 7th grade classroom. She walked down the halls to the front doors, and sat down on a bench in front of the school to wait for her driver to come pick her up. Opening her bag, she pulled out her headphones- and sighed as she untangled the cord for like, the fiftieth time that day. Plugging them into her IPod, she turned it on and pressed play. She closed her eyes as violin music began to play softly. She loved the violin, and had tried taking lessons, but unfortunately she wasn't very good. She played ukulele quite well though, even writing her own songs. Her mind drifted, thinking about an essay on the Yellow Fever that was due tomorrow for her History class. Luckily, she was almost finished with it, and all she had to do was check the grammar.
"Miss Edwards? " A voice roused her from her thoughts, and she opened her eyes. Her chauffeur stood beside the shiny dark blue BMW X5 that had pulled up in front of the school without her noticing.
"Are you ready to go?" He asked her. Standing, Adaliah picked up her bag and headed towards the car.
"Yes, Kayden. Thank you" She said as her chauffeur opened the door for her. As she settled herself in her seat, he got in the car and began the drive to her house. It was in the country outside of the city, and it was more of a mansion than a house, really. Four stories of brick and stone, with turrets and gables and large fancy windows. Behind it stretched acres of forest, and a large garden with fountains and trees lay in front. As they pulled into the garage, Adaliah noted, with no small amount of relief, that the only cars there belonged to her family. The girls her parents wanted her to be friends with were annoying, snobby, and had no appreciation for archery, biking, or Redwall by Brian Jacques. No appreciation for any books, really. Even though Adaliah had dyslexia, she loved reading, and managed to struggle through the swirling words to get to the amazing story.
Grabbing her bag, she hopped out of the car and headed out of the garage and up several flights of stairs to her room, on the fourth floor. Pushing open the door, she dropped her bag on the chair of her desk, pushed the door shut with her foot and flopped on her bed, exhausted from school.
Her room was all things green. Her walls, what was visible of them underneath all the drawings and paintings she had made, were a dark green, and she had painted on darker tree silhouettes. Her carpet was the colour of new grass, save for a few stains of paint. Her bed had four dark wooden posts carved with vines, and a gossamer canopy and drapes that matched the pale green curtains on two of the windows. The third window had a cushioned seat covered in books and embroidered green pillows. Dark wooden shelves were filled to overflowing with books and figurines of dragons and mythical creatures. Her bedspread matched the pale green window curtains. Her desk and chair were the same dark, vine carved wood as her bed frame, and a green cushion rested on the seat of the chair.
Adaliah buried her face in her pillow, closing her eyes against the headache that was forming. 'Maybe a nap will take care of it,' Adaliah thought. Sitting up, she kicked off her shoes and crawled under the covers. She'd do her homework when she woke up. Moments after her head hit the pillow, she was asleep. And she dreamed.
-DREAM-
A girl, perhaps 17, paced furiously in a huge room full of crates and palettes of merchandise. Her face was a thunderhead. Another girl around the same age, knelt in front of the furious girl, looking as though she wished she could hide behind her long brown hair. She cringed slightly when the girl whirled on her, her blue eyes flashing, black braid lashing the air as she turned.
"How could you let this happen? I leave you in charge of it for one day, ONE DAY and it disappears? One of our most sacred artifacts, and you let it get stolen? Do you have any idea of how much trouble we went through to get it back the first time, Yohanna? I knew I should have taken it with me!" The black-haired girl fumed. The kneeling girl, Yohanna, looked like she was on the verge of tears.
"I-I am sorry, my Queen! Please, I don't know what happened! One moment I was guarding it, the next something hit my head, and I was waking up on the floor! T-the only evidence that anyone was there at all was a golden drachma on the floor, like it fell out of the thief's pocket. It must have been a Greek, my queen! O-or a god!" Yohanna said desperately.
"A Greek? Or a god?" The Queen said dubiously. "Why would a Greek steal it? Only an one of our warriors can wield its power. Not even a god can use it."
"I do not know, my queen. Shall I send a group to the Camp, to spy?" Yohanna asked. The Queen nodded slowly.
"Yes...You will head a group of five, and 'visit' the Camp. Do not tell them what happened. See if it's there. If it isn't, find where they hid it at any cost. Greek or god, no one steals from the Queen of the Amazons" Yohanna bowed her head, relieved.
"Yes, my Queen. It shall be as you command." Suddenly, her head jerked up and she looked around the room, focusing her piercing green eyes on Adaliah.
"We're being watched, my Queen! I sense a presence." The queen followed the path of Yohanna's gaze, and without warning, a dagger was sent hurtling towards Adaliah's heart-
Adaliah jerked awake, gasping. Her room was dark, save for the the light from the half moon that filtered through her window. She touched her chest, where the dagger had almost pierced it. There was no blood, no dagger through her heart. It was only dream. Taking a shaky breath, she slipped of her bed and padded softly to the windows. She stared into glass at her reflection, ghostly pale in the moon light.
'It was only a dream.'
