"You're in a good mood" Brandon's mother said as he came to breakfast "yeah" he said. He went to sleep thinking about his plan. She looked at him with questions as she placed a plate in front of him. "You okay?" She asked, she poured him a cup of coffee. "I was thinking of moving back here," Brandon said. "OH! Really?!" She beamed. He sipped his coffee and began to eat. "Yeah, you know any realtors? Brandon asked "well... Ummie is the first to come to mind" his mother said with thought. "Oh, I have no number to contact her" Brandon said. She looked at him with even more questions "I don't know what you're up to son but I hope it works out" she says as she digs into her purse and pulls out her phone.
"Ammie! Come on down for breakfast!" Ummie called out as she poured herself a cup of coffee. "Coming!" Ammie called back, Ummie could hear her footsteps upstairs as she was getting ready for school. Ammie came down the stairs "Why does school have to be so early" Ammie whined. Honestly Ummie didn't have an answer to that question "well you wouldn't have a hard time getting up if you went to bed on time" Ummie said. "Me going to bed late isn't the problem, it's not good for my growing brain to be woken up so early" Ammie said. "It's also bad for a growing brain to be playing your Nintendo at 11 pm" Ummie teases her daughter. She wriggled her nose "Animal Crossing is a game that helps grow my brain" She says sassily bites into a sausage patty. "Where's your proof Ms. Lawyer?" Ummie asked with a laugh. "I'll get back to you with my statistics," Ammie said. Ummie laughed again at her daughter and she was sure she would come back with statistics too.
Bethany waited anxiously for her doctor to come to tell her some news. Hopefully good news. Her doctor came in with her clipboard, her face grim. Bethany's heart dropped "Mrs. Williams, I want to ask if you have told your husband about how sick you've been" she asked carefully. "There was nothing to tell Dr. Taylor" Bethany said "once we discovered the lump we treated it right away" she added quickly. "I think it would be best to tell him and your daughter" Dr. Taylor looked at her sadly. "The cancer has come back and is more aggressive this time." she said Bethany bit her lip that was the last thing she wanted to hear. "You're talking like there is nothing you can do to help me," Bethany said. Dr. Taylor's eyes almost looked like they had tears in them. "How much longer do I have then?" Bethany asked "6 to 8 months" she said. "You should tell your family and friends, if we find anything that can help in any way we will" she said. Bethany nodded, grabbing her purse. Her life was reduced to just a few months. How could she tell Brendan that she was dying?
The doctor's words repeated over again in Bethany's mind. She proceeded to cook a grand dinner for her husband and daughter before breaking the news. They would have everything they loved. Bethany stopped mid-chop tears streaming down her cheeks. "We're home!" her husband announced "we're home! We're home!" their daughter echoed after him as she heard them come in. Bethany quickly wiped her face "Hey my loves" she called out to them hoping her voice didn't sound like it was breaking. They both came into the kitchen, "something smells good" Bailey said. "It sure does" her husband said "umm I just thought we should have a good meal" Bethany said quickly giving them both a hug and a kiss. "I also have some news," she said. Brendon looked at her with a question, he could read her like a book. "I have news as well. Our class reunion is coming up" Brendon said. "What's that?" Bailey asked her father. "Come on, let's go fix the table and I'll tell you" he said. They went into the dining room filling the house with their sweet conversations.
"Why would you want to go back to school?" she asks with a questionable frown. "Well it's not necessarily about going back to school" Brendon said. His thoughts were half on his wife. He could sense something was wrong with her. "I don't get it" she said. Bethany came in with the food "well it's like a playdate but for adults who went to school together" Bethany explained. He was so lucky to have such a beautiful and understanding wife. "Oh, so you go and meet people," she said. Bethany began to fix plates. He could see a slight shake in her arm, "what did you do today?" He asked, "well... I did some grocery shopping" she said. Did she want to say more? Brendon wondered. "How was work?" Bethany asked, changing the subject. "It was good. Working on a new project in the inner city. An old school is about to be torn down but I'm fixing to buy it and make it into a community building for the youth" he said.
