Arizona could feel his own heat.
It burned under his skin like molten rock, twisting and spurting out flames. An unquenchable fire raged.
His people were doing everything to stop it he knew. But the fire ate up the dry grass and the lack of water wasn't helping anything.
Ari could feel the pain if those who died. The animals and people. But he also felt the relieving cry of the pine trees that needed the fire to repopulate.
But that only gave him a little comfort. Ari still felt the fire and the way it burned. Fires happened every summer. But this one was worse.
Ari tried to keep his dry sobs quiet, but New Mexico heard. His brother gently patted his back. Ari felt him flinch away because of the heat.
"Would a glass of water help?"
"No." Ari choked out. "But can you get one for me?" It would spare his brother the pain of having to watch Ari burn from the inside. "And can you ask dad for some painkillers?"
New Mexico left. Ari curled around himself and wanted the burning to end.
