Chapter 2. The History of The Midnight Pack.
It had been three days that me and Judith had left the Midnight pack. Three days since I had rejected my mate. Three days since my sixteenth birthday. Three days that I had spent in human form walking around because I didn't know how to shift. You see, the Midnight pack is a strict and ruthless pack. Kill or be killed I guess. My great great great great great grandfather, Alexander Edger Midnight, had started the pack around two hundred years ago. He was the first in the pack to ever shift and become one with nature. His wolf had been pure white. The strongest sign amongst wolves. As great as it may sound... it isn't. Alexander Midnight was ruthless... He would kill for pleasure. He saw us females as weak and fragile creatures, meant to be pushed around and punished for nothing. He had killed his first life long mate, Elizabeth Midnight, after the birth of his first born son. He had made the pack the way it was today. He had demanded that no omega be able to shift unless they leave pack and break bonds. Us omegas were seen as small and helpless people without a wolf to call our own. He made the culture of the pack, and by sticking to that culture the Midnight pack was the strongest pack ever in the North Americas.
So it was no surprise that I didn't know how to shift I had never been taught. Cruel, right? You'd think that they would be willing to teach us how to shift and train us so that we could help in battle right? Wrong. Apparently we just slowed down the group. We took to long to train. We weren't strong enough. We were to slow things like that had given us omegas a bad name.
I turned to Judith who was walking slowly beside me with her head down. I stopped and put a hand on her shoulder and waited till she looked up and smiled to say, " If you want we can rest here for the night. I don't mind." Smiling greatfully Judith hugged me tightly.
I walked around trying to clear my thoughts. I could hear Judith's soft snores coming from her sleeping bag. A sleeping bag that we had picked up a few hours after leaving West Virginia, home and territory of the Midnight pack. We were going to make our way to Alabama we desided sometime yesterday night while sitting at a campfire huddled together in refuge from the cold chill of the wind.
I tried to focuse on shifting but it never came. So I gave up and went to lay down and call it a night. Laying down on the unrolled black sleeping bag I closed my eyes and prepared myself for a long journey tomorrow. Little did I know, I wasn't going to get much sleep tonight.
