Chapter 7. The Change

I had ran as long and as fast as I possibly could... now I needed time to rest.

I looked around at my surroundings, trying to find a place too sleep. I didn't want it so low on the ground that anyone after me could get me, but then again I don't want it to high in the air so that if I fall I don't break my neck and die.

There was nothing but trees and cliffs all around me. If I didn't at least find a cave or something to sleep in I was gonna have to keep on moving.

I had left the cabin around noon when I'd ran out. It was now late at night....and a day had already passed since I'd left.

I continued to search for a place to stay. Hours passed. I had found nothing...nothing at all. This sucked.

Deciding to pass the time I tried one again to focus on shifting.

Just as I was about to close my eyes I heard a rustling in a bush to the right side of me. I jumped up to my feet and looked towards the sound. Out of the bush came a beautiful red fox. It tilted its head to the side and looked at me with a look of curiosity.

Trying my luck I took a step towards it seeing if it would run or stay put. Surprisingly it took a step towards me as well. "Haven't you ever heard that staring is rude?" I jumped at the sound of the voice that had run through the night. "Who's there?" I asked. I turned back to the fox to see if it had ran or if it was still there. To my surprise it was still standing in the same spot, staring at me. Wait a minute... I was beginning to wander if it was the fox who had spoke to me... I decided to ask it... "Umm I'm sorry but....did you just speak?" The fox let out a low purring sound that reminded me of a cat. "You do know that you look a little bit crazy talking to me out loud right? I mean all you have to do is talk to me through your mind." I couldn't help it, I screamed. I was taken so off guard by this that I fell and landed in a pile of wet leaves. The fox came close once more and said to me "All you need to do is look at me and focus. Think of my fur. Of my eyes. Of my sly beauty. Think of me and then reach to touch the top of my head. Its all you have to do. You are special Jane and unlike anyone before you. You are a shifter. Now do as I said and touch me."
To confused to argue with this magnificent creature I desided to obey it. I closed my eyes and focused on every small detail I could of the red fox. Its large brown eyes, its soft brownish red fur that starts on its head and goes to the white tip of its tail.

Then I reached forward, just like it had said to do, and touched the top of its head right behind its left ear. At first nothing happened then a slight burning sensation starting running up my arm. It began to hurt more the further up my arm it went, and when it reached my back I felt like I was on fire. Hours passed of me screaming in agonizing pain....then as quick as it had started it stopped leaving me laying on the cold hard ground confused. My body hurt everywhere. I tried to stand up but couldn't. There was something very wrong with my legs... and my body.... I was covered in bright red fur from head to toe.... my ears were longer and further atop of my head. A tail had sproughted out from my butt... and I had four legs instead of two.... I was a freaking fox.

The fox that had done this to me, was now no where to be seen...

I laid there on the ground too tired to move too scared to get up and run... at least now I was safe.... this was the best disguise I had.
