"Did you bring the stuff?" Asked Nikki, who was bouncing in her seat excitedly.
"Indeed I did. The Tostito chips, Skittles, and Kit Kats are all here." Kat replied. Nikki smiled wide, and grabbed the bags out of Katerina's hands before she could say anything else.
Kat and Nikki started eating their "breakfast" in comfortable silence until the song came on the radio.
Come On Eileen.
This was Nikki and Kat's song. They couldn't help but "dance" (which was them just flailing their arms and legs) in the backseat while Katerina's mom chuckled from the front seat.
"COME ON EILEEN, OH I SWEAR, WHAT HE MEANS, AT THIS MOMENT.." Yelled/ sung Nikki and Kat. They've been attached at the hip since grade one. Don't try to separate them, because a cyclone of terror will be unleashed upon you. These two could unleash hell on earth, despite their quiet exteriors.Flashes of green and lush summer scenery flashed by the car window, speeding away like whispers of the wind. The open fields and dense forests slowly turned into the Long Island Sound. The sky was like a water-colored canvas, royal purples and blues dripping down into the yellow and orange skyline, then pouring gracefully into the sea. The girls took a moment to enjoy the scenery, Nikki admiring the sky, and Kat admiring the ocean. Kat always liked the sea. She'd always have the impulse to go near it when given the chance.
Though, weird things did happen around her, especially around water sources. Once in fourth grade, a girl was making fun of Kat and Nikki in the hallway for liking Harry Potter. They'd stayed quiet, but were writhing on the inside as the girl went on and on, shoving her snotty little opinions into their faces.
At that point, Kat had snapped. But just as she was about to retort, she'd felt a mysterious tug in her gut, and the water fountain on the side of the hallway had exploded, showering the bully in a torrent of tap water. The whole hallway had erupted in laughter, making the little girl walk away huffily, telling the teacher that Kat had somehow splashed her, and got her in trouble. That definitely wasn't the first time that something like that has happened; and definitely not the last.
On the other hand, Nikki loved the stars. Astronomy was a hobby, and she loved looking up towards the heavens.
Nikki has also had some rather odd occurrences; things that others would not consider normal. Like random objects disappearing at random times, especially when her father was looking for them. Even her saying odd things without realizing it.
When she was five, Nikki had gone on a camping trip with her father. It had rained the night before, so the forest was still damp and chilly, leaving Nikki and her father shivering. The wood that he collected for a fire was soggy, and there was no chance of being able to light it. Nikki was too cold, and was staring at the pitiful pile of wood, willing it to light.
And it did.
Her father had asked her many times what she had said to make the fire light, and her only reply would be: "I didn't say anything, Daddy!"
Weird occurrences like this seem to follow them both.
"Nikki, you know what I just realized?" Kat asked.
"What?"
"I'm not gonna see my dad or brothers for a week. A whole week without them bugging us. How great is that?"
Nikki and Katerina continued to converse about the trip in the backseat, while Mrs. Greene kept her worried eyes on the road.
It will be okay. Mrs. Greene thought. It's going to be fine. Nikki and Kat were oblivious to the fact that the event that was going to happen in a few mere hours was going to change their lives forever.
