"𝐀𝐧𝐢, 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭?"
"No, dont worry..."
"Ani, The..." he sighed, "the map is upside down."
"...oH."
Link face palmed, not knowing how to feel. It felt like they were walking around in circles and the theory was confirmed when it was revealed that they were, indeed, lost.
"I'm sorry Gege, but everything on the map looks the exact same." Link looked at him questioningly. "Here, lemme see the map." He held over the map and indeed, everything looked the same.
"What kind of map makes everything look the same." Link grumbled, turning the map left to right, hoping to understand it somehow. "Or maybe we just dont know how to read maps." Johnny remarked. Link paused, "No yeah, that's true."
"Hmm..." Johnny leaned and looked over his brotherly friend's shoulder. "We can try and stay on the path. We may come across someone along the way." He offered. Link hummed, thinking about it. He pointed at the trail they were on. "If we continue, we'll make it to a popular kid's fishing pond where a lot of people usually go to." He looks up at him, eyes bright. "Sooo if we find someone there, we can ask them for help! Brilliant idea Ani!" They shared a grin.
The two continued the path, making small talk, discussing future plans, and checking the map every few seconds make sure they were still on path.
As they walked, the sun slowly began to go down and the temperature became cooler. The only sound being the satisfying crunch of autumn leaves echoing quietly throughout the silent forest.
It was too quiet.
There were no birds chirping and feeding their young, no wind rustling the tree leaves, no coyotes yipping, or even the distant talking of people, nothing.
It felt like they were in a horror film of sorts and it was getting increasingly more eerie as they continued their way.
And then soon enough, the once peaceful sunset sky darkened ominously and stormlike clouds began to form, covering the heavenly plains above from view.
Link glanced up at the sky before looking at Johnny, a feeling of uneasiness settling in his stomach. "Johnny..."
Said boy hummed in response, knowing what he wanted to say. "Just a little bit more, the lake should be..right.. around...there!" They saw a clearing up ahead and the two began to run towards it.
But there was no lake, there was no pond, there was no water. Not even a single person was there.
All that was there in the clearing was burnt grass surrounding a large, shallow craterlike hole in the ground where the pond would have been. All around the clearing were leaveless trees that were burned, something they failed to notice when they ran here.
Just what had happened here?
And up above the sky began rumbled warningly.
"Gege, I'm pretty sure there's going to be a storm soon." Johnny said nervously. Link looked up, and a drop of water fell down onto the map, smudging it. They whipped their heads to look at eachother and nodded in silent agreement. "We've gotta find shelter!" Link's eyes hurriedly swept over their surroundings, after a bit he caught something on the other side of the pond.
An old abandoned building.
"There!" He yelled over the now roaring winds, barely able to make his brother figure hear him.
They tried to run towards the shelter but the wind pushed them back. Their hair flew in their face and made it hard to see. The sky began to cackle and light up, in the distance they could hear the striking and rumbling of thunder on the ground.
Link noticed that Johnny was lagging behind, he went back a bit and began to push his back, trying to help him. Johnny began to do the same.
Suddenly everything stopped.
Johnny couldn't see or hear anything, all there was was a blinding white light and a loud ring in his ear. There was no thunder or rain they could hear. He could feel Link's hand on his back but it seemed as if every other senses failed him...
'We should have stayed home...' was his last thought before ultimately losing consciousness.
