At precisely eleven at night, Rosella, Perse and Draco were at the right hand corridor on the third floor.

"This is it." Perse said, wringing her hands.

"No matter what happens, you'll always be my best friends. I promise." Rose said.

"Cross my heart and hope to die." Perse promised.

"Why would anyone hope to die?." Draco said in distaste.

"It's a way of expressing a promise." Perse explained before whispering, "Alohomora." The door opened with a small click. She opened the door and they found the dog there asleep.

"Someone's been here already. " Draco realised.

"Don't worry. Help open the trapdoor." Perse said. They pushed the paw off the trapdoor and jumped through it.

"Wow, this is soft." Draco said.

Suddenly thick vines began coiling around their limbs and neck.

"Wait, I know what this is. It's devil's snare. Just do what I tell you to do." Rose instructed. "Stop moving and even your breathing."

They did as they were told, and slowly they all slid down to the bottom.

"Nice one." Perse smiled and they walked into the next room

"Are those birds?" Perse asked in wonder.

"Keys. And one of them fits into the keyhole." Rose pointed out.

"Ok, and there's a broom. So we have to fly and get the key. But there are hundreds here." Draco said.

"We're looking for a big, old-fashioned one — probably silver, like thehandle." after looking towards the ceiling, Rose said, " I can see it! It's the one with the broken wing."

"To make things easier . . ." Draco trailed off as he took out his wand. "Immobulus!" he said and the keys froze in mid air.

"They'll turn back to normal in fifteen minutes or so." Draco said. He mounted the broom and in a few seconds he was back on the ground with the key.

"That was brilliant." Rose said as they walked into the next room.

"Chess? I'm horrible at chess!" Perse complained.

"I'm not." Draco and Rose said together.

"So we have to play, like live chessmen?"

"I guess so."

"Fine." Perse said.

"Rosella, you're in the empty bishops place. I'm the rook. Perse, you're in the Queen's place." Draco instructed.

"Thanks Dray." Perse cooed.

They played for a while. Rosella and Draco looked at each other. "I got it." Rose said.

"Perse, we make our move. You're free to checkmate the king." Rose said.

"No, I'm not letting you do that!" Perse shouted, realising what her best friends were trying to do.

Draco ignored Perse. He made his move and the queen hit him with her club.

" Draco!" Perse screamed, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"We'll be alright." Rose smiled sadly.

She made her move and was hit on the head by the queen.

Perse inhaled deeply and walked five steps forward.
