Birthday walk

I stood there a bit shocked at what I just heard. 'Did she say happy birthday?'

"My baby is turning twenty two!" Kuchel put the cake down and hugged Levi tightly. He clicked his tongue and looked the other way looking annoyed but he didn't push her away.

"Wait- today's your birthday?!" I asked. He looked at me without responding but then he finally said.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?!!! Happy birthday!!!" I tackled him to the ground with a hug. He let out a grunt and then a sigh.

"It's not like you absolutely need to know." Levi said. I let out a huff, feeling offended.

"Of course I need to know!" I crossed my arms over my chest. Kuchel let out a laugh and started cutting the cake into equal sized pieces.

"Well now you know and the problem is solved." He said as he took a piece and put it on a plate.

"But I bought you only one present."

"And that's enough for me." He handed the plate to me and then handed me a fork. I started eating my cake with a pout on my face. It wasn't fair that he only got one present from me, he deserved much more than that.

"Let's go on a walk." I said as I put Levi's hand in mine. He looked up from his phone and grimaced and then looked back down. 'He doesn't wanna go on a walk.'

"Please..." I gently tugged on his hand, hoping he will change his mind.

"It's cold outside." He said as an excuse.

"That's perfect! That means the snow won't melt and we can have a snowball fight." I smirked. He sighed and shook his head.

"The snow is filthy."

"And so is your phone but you're still touching it." He brought his eyes up once more not saying anything. I guess my argument was good.

"It's not filthy, because it's my phone." He mumbled. I sighed and laid back down on the couch, giving up on trying to make him go on a walk with me.

"Levi go on a walk with Y/n." Kuchel's voice was heard, not too far away from the living room.

"Mom, you were listening?" Levi asked in disbelief.

"Yes, I was listening to Y/n pleading for you to go on a walk and you refusing every time." Levi didn't say anything back, he just stared at the ceiling.

"You really want to go don't you?" He asked while looking at me. I nodded my head 'yes'. "Fine. We'll go on a walk." My eyes lit up at his words.

"Thank you!!!" I hugged him. He patted my head and put his shoes on.

"So where do you want to go?" Levi asked me. I shrugged.

"I just want to walk around the neighborhood." I said. My fingertips felt cold so I blew on the to warm them up. Levi noticed and took one of my hands and put it in the pocket on his trench coat.

"You should've taken gloves. Should I go back and get you some?" He asked.

"No, I'm fine." I assured him. He looked at me skeptical but didn't ask any questions.

The wind blew as a silence settled over us. Neither of us said anything, it was enough for us to be together and feel like we're not alone. I got used to the silence, considering Levi wasn't the most talkative person out there.

"Y/n." I suddenly heard my name come out from his parted lips.

"Hm?" I hummed. He took that as a sign to continue.

"Do you still feel like you don't belong in the music industry?" The topic got serious. I was avoiding this conversation, because I simply didn't know the answer myself. But now I don't think I can keep avoiding it. It was time to end this subject once and for all.

"Kinda." I mentally face palmed. Levi was probably expecting more to that answer, considering I thought for about ten seconds before responding.

"That's the answer? Kinda?" I sighed and started to form my sentence.

"I mean...I don't mind playing piano but there was just a lot of pressure on me just because I was really good at it and I felt overwhelmed. So that's why I thought of quitting." I finally gave a full explanation. And it seemed like Levi was satisfied with that.

"Why do you ask?" I questioned. He looked at me like he wasn't expecting me to ask that.

"Just because." He said as he shrugged his shoulders. I knew there was more to that. He had a proper reason not just because.

"Be honest." I requested. He let out a sigh and prepared to respond once more.

"Because I-... I like when you're playing piano." He admitted. His cheeks were tinted with a light shade of red but I wasn't sure if he was blushing or if it was from the cold.

"Then that's enough for me to start playing piano again. So far I've been going to my classes but I hadn't sat at a piano for three weeks or so." I explained. I didn't even realize that I was smiling. I guess all I needed was for someone to tell me they appreciated my work.

"So you're not quitting?" He asked as if he wasn't sure.

"Well not anymore." I assured him. "Besides, if I were to quit I would have to leave campus and we would be at a longer distance from each other." I explained.

"But if you did quit. Would you go back to live with your family?" Levi asked and I immediately answered.

"No." I said sternly.

"I hope you don't mind me asking, but why aren't you on good terms with them." This was another conversation that I was dreading but I knew he was curious and he had the right to know.

"Because they haven't supported me in anything I've done. I've been playing piano since I was seven and they always said it was a waste of time and it won't get me anywhere. I didn't even have a piano at home."

"And now you're majoring in music?"

"Yes, because Hange was my music teacher in school and one day she caught me trying to play the piano we had in school, she offered to give me lessons and I was more than happy to accept." I explained.

"And did your parents pay for your piano lessons?" Levi asked. He seemed confused but I don't even blame him, it's a confusing part of my life after all.

"No, they already paid for the school so even if Hange wanted to, she wasn't allowed to charge extra." Levi nodded, understanding the situation.

"Well now you have lots of people supporting you. Including me." He kissed the top of my head lovingly. I smiled and thanked him. I was really grateful to have people that support me now.

Levi stopped walking as he felt something hit his arm. He looked at me and saw me molding a snowball from the fallen snow.

"Brat, you'll regret this."
