Newt and Thomas walk down the road, holding hands.

"How much farther?" Thomas asks.

"Tommy, you're acting like a child." Newt says. "But according to my map, we're about fifty miles from Canada."

"Your map?" Thomas questions.

"My amazing sense of direction." Newt says, grinning.

"Amazing sense of direction?" Thomas asks.

"Oh, shut up." Newt says, pulling on his arm.

Thomas smiles. Then, Thomas falls over, pulling Newt down with him. Newt falls on top of him. It takes a moment for them to realize their situation. Then, Newt jumps up, blushing, putting a hand behind his neck. Thomas scrambles up too.

"Uh, sorry." Thomas says, bright red. "I didn't-didn't mean to-"

"Yeah, er, right, me either." Newt says.

They stand awkwardly for a moment.

"Newt, I-" Thomas starts.

"No, no, I-it's-" Newt shakes his head. "We should get going."

Thomas nods. They start walking again and Newt holds out his hand. Thomas looks at him.

"I just-just-just hold my hand, Tommy." Newt says.

Thomas smiles softly. He slips his hand into the other boys. Newt pulls him down the road.

"Come on, Tommy." Newt says. "We have to hurry."

The boys run down the road, hand in hand.

They lay underneath the stars that night, arms around each other.

"You know," Thomas says. "My life used to be boring. I don't know what I was doing. I mean, look at you. You're the same age as me and your life is so much better than mine. You've actually done things."

"Yeah, but Tommy," Newt says. "At least you aren't in constant danger. Well, now you are. Sorry about that, by the way."

Thomas chuckles softly. "Don't be. I like it a whole lot better."

Newt rests his head against Thomas's neck. "You just like it better with me."

"Yeah," Thomas says. "I really do."

"You're pretty much perfect, aren't you?" Newt says, smiling.

"Not quite." Thomas says. "But you are."

Newt moves, placing a hand on either side of Thomas. "You really are though."

He leans over and kisses Thomas gently. Thomas doesn't have time to register what's happening before Newt gets up and runs away down the road. Thomas lays there for a second for sitting up. His fingers brush his lips before standing up, his legs shaking.

"Newt!" He shouts. "Wait!"

Newt doesn't respond, running farther down the road. Thomas runs after him. After about ten minutes, Newt slows down. Thomas catches up to him.

"Hey, what-" Thomas starts.

"Not now, Tommy." Newt says. Pain flashes across his face.

"Whoa, are you okay?" Thomas asks, putting a hand on his back.

"N-not really." Newt says. He closes his eyes, swaying slightly.

"What's happening?" Thomas asks.

"It's-it's nothing." Newt says. "It's just my leg. I'm-I'll be fine."

"Okay, you need to sit down," Thomas says. "Can you walk?"

"Yeah." Newt says. He tries to take a step but his leg nearly buckles. "Nope!"

Thomas puts an arm around his waist. Newt puts his arm over Thomas's shoulder and lets him help him sit down.

"Tommy," Newt says. "About earlier-"

"No, no," Thomas says. "Not now."

Thomas leans against a tree and Newt sits in front of him, leaning back against him. He rests his head on Thomas's shoulder.

"Sorry," Newt breathes. "I don't-I don't know what happened. I-I was fine. I'm-I'm sorry."

"No." Thomas says, combing a hand through his hair. "You have nothing to be sorry for, alright?"

"I do have one thing." Newt says. "To be sorry for."

"What?" Thomas asks.

"Kissing you." Newt says. "Could we just pretend like it never happened?"

"No. We can't." Thomas says.

"Why not?" Newt says. "Did I scare you that bad?"

"No." Thomas says. "I just like you that much."

Newt's eyes flicker open. "What?" Newt says quietly. "You like me?"

"You think I just run away with random boys?" Thomas says.

"I kinda figured." Newt says.

"But yeah." Thomas says. "I like you."

He kisses him softly. Newt leans into it for a second before pulling away.

"Okay, but not now." Newt says. "I'm still kinda in pain here."

"Right." Thomas says. "Sorry."

"Thanks, Tommy." Newt says.

"Anytime."
