That morning I woke up to loud laughter that I recognized as Jeena's.
I stood up and rubbed my eyes to try and get my blurred vision to clear. I had reached over to the nightstand to check the clock, forgetting I wasn't in my room. I then looked above her door frame to look at the time, but I couldn't read it for some reason. Maybe I still had sleep in my eyes. From where the hands were pointing, it showed nearly 10 am.
More laughter filled my ears, so I stepped out of her room to check what she was laughing about.
"Andrew?" I raised my eyebrows.
His arms were around Jeena's waist as if he didn't wanna let her go. "We have some news."
I raised my eyebrow. "News?"
Jeena held up her left hand to reveal a bright shiny stone attached to a ring on her finger. "We're getting married!"
I nearly choked on air. "What?!"
"Isn't it great?" Andrew shoved his nose into her neck making her giggle.
"Are you crazy-" I tried to say, but a nearly four-foot child came running into the room.
"Mommy! Daddy showed me how to tie my shoe!" She said, holding up her foot with a perfectly tied shoelace on it.
"Mommy?" I asked.
Then George came into the room and picked up the kid. "My little girl is growing up so fast," he looked at me. "Our little girl."
I nearly passed out. "What...? What is happening?"
"What's wrong honey?" George put the child back down. "You look ill. Do you want to lay down?"
My head was spinning. What on earth...
I woke up again.
I found myself in my bed, but I didn't remember waking up to move. Unless I sleep walked. I reached over and felt my tiny clock which I could actually read. It was nine-thirty, so I stood up to go check outside and make sure there were no surprise proposals that came out of nowhere.
Jeena was sitting on the couch in her pajamas. It looked like she had gotten a shower. "Good morning DJ."
I nodded and signed as I hit the couch next to her.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing, really. I had a crazy dream."
"Care to share?"
I shook my head, feeling it start to hurt. "Maybe later. I don't know why it's messing with my brain so much already. I just woke up."
"Is your head okay? I've never seen you like this." She tapped my forehead.
"I'm fine," I stood up to get myself food and an aspirin. The headache was rapidly getting worse.
"You seem a little flustered. Was it dirty?" She teased me.
"Shut up." I sighed. "No, it was just whacky. If you keep asking me questions I'll never tell you what happened. You'll just spend the rest of your day wondering."
I poured out some yogurt into a cup and washed a few strawberries to dip inside. "How long we're you up talking with Andrew?"
She was quiet.
"Jeena?"
"Um," she started. "I didn't go to sleep actually. I hung up a few minutes before I took a shower."
I scoffed with a laugh. "Jeena you need to watch it with how long you spend on that thing. We'll go broke. Also, aren't you exhausted? Maybe you should go take a nap. Last night was crazy."
"I'll survive, I had some coffee." She waved it off.
"We gave ourselves a day off for a reason. To rest up. Why don't you take advantage of that if we don't get to sleep in tomorrow?"
She had nothing to say to that. Instead, she took my advice and walked into the hallway to go to her bedroom. I looked through the tv channels but never ended up finding anything worthwhile to sit for hours upon end to watch. So I took out all of our cassette tapes and chose the muppet movie. In fact, Jeena was the one who brought a ton of these from her parent's house. She hadn't bought anything recently to watch on our own time, nor had I.
While I waited for the intro to start, I thought about how I was turning eighteen soon. I didn't want to, because it frightened me a little. The only reason Jeena and I got to move out was because she became an adult before I did, so I just followed her with the moving process.
I've been dreading this moment, for whatever reason. Especially since I had no one but Jeena's mom and dad to teach me a few things about adulting. (I mean, I already did some of the hard parts, and I'm still a minor)
We rarely see them. They moved to Wyoming mainly to settle down. They were retiring soon since they were so wealthy. I thought it was cute though. It's always snowy there, and pretty. They told me they would invite us over in July since they always did a Christmas in July. Jeena's mom, Martha, always says Christmas doesn't last long enough, which I can't disagree with. Two days while other holidays can get over a week?
I took out some English homework that I didn't finish, which I only had a little bit left to do. We had to choose a book and write an essay on it. Jeena and I had the same teacher and period for Mr. Bernard. He was pretty laid back and barely gave us any work. He was kind enough to only make it one page, but I loved to write and he knew that, so I think he expects at LEAST two.
By the time I finished, it was two in the afternoon, and Jeena came out of her room. "You were right, I feel a lot better. Plus, my headache is gone."
"Good," I said
"Let me guess, you wrote over three pages?"
"Actually, you're right." I laughed, staring at my five clean papers.
The phone in my room started ringing. I stood up but Jeena beat me to it.
"What if it's not for you?" I raised an eyebrow.
"It's probably not." She picked it up with a smile. "Never mind,.It's for me."
"Why didn't you give him your phone number?" I asked.
"I don't know... it didn't cross my mind."
I yanked the phone out of her hand. "Hey, Andrew. I suggest you'd grab a pen and paper because you'll want to start calling this number instead."
He laughed. "Alright DJ.'
I repeated the number twice before hanging up, and soon the phone in her room was ringing. She glared at me but left without saying a word. I hopped onto my bed. I couldn't stop thinking about how I was just a phone call away from talking to George again. I was really tempted to sneak into Jeena's room and "borrow" her phone since she was already on the phone with his best friend. But I didn't want to raise the phone bill any higher than it could be. Either we should resort to sending letters every so often, or just move to England. I doubt we would have the money for that though.
There was a knock on my door. "Do you wanna order pizza?"
"Sure. Did Andrew have to go?" I asked and shut my notebook.
"Yeah," Jeena said, trying to seem too disappointed. "Their next show starts at the same time as soon, so they have to rehearse a bunch, which also means they need a lot of sleep..."
She began to yawn. I chuckled watching her pick up the phone slowly. "Maybe you should go to bed early. You know, since you're literally falling asleep standing there."
She shook her head. "I'll be fine. I just need something to wake me back up. Like jumping jacks, or cold water on my face, or something. What should I ask for?"
"Just get a large, we can split it," I called out to her as I went back Into my room to put my schoolwork away. I was not happy about going back to school, as anybody would be. I wondered for a while if I should even consider college, but the reason I decided to at least try was honestly because Jeena had convinced me to.
I hoped that was the right decision. Because the next thing I knew I was actually engaging in searching for college matches for me.
