The fear and excitement was bad enough without everyone staring! Lily tried again to find out why.
"Dad, why is everyone staring at me?" She asked.
"It's because your so pretty!" Harry said smiling.
"Dad!"
"What?"
"Why-"
"It's nothing for you to worry about. You'll find out when your older." Harry said soothingly.
Older. How much older do I have to get? Thought Lily. Before either of them could say anymore, the shrill whistle sounded and Lily's heart jumped. I'm finally going!
"Hurry up you two!" Called a voice from the distance.
Ginny's vivid red hair, so much like Lily's, was visible before the rest of her, Albus and James trailing after.
"Hurry mum, there's gonna be no compartments left!" James groaned.
Lily gave her mum a kiss and her dad a hug, then stepped onto the crimson Hogwarts Express for the first time in her life. She turned to wave and saw her Auntie Hermione and Uncle Ron had joined Harry and Ginny and she could see Teddy Lupin behind them. Tears threatened to choke Lily as she waved goodbye to her family as they grew smaller and smaller, then disappeared as they turned a corner. She felt a hand on her shoulder and turned to see Rosie and Hugo, Ron and Hermione's kids, had caught up with them. James had left to find a compartment with his friends and Albus and Rose left, leaving Lily and Hugo alone.
"Well, let's find a seat before they're all gone." said Hugo.
Hugo and Lily didn't mind being left together. They acted like brother and sister and, with their flaming red hair, freckles and emerald green eyes, they looked like it too. They grabbed their trunks and Lily grabbed Ollie, her barn owl, and they heaved them towards the emptiest compartment they could find.
"Excuse me, are these seats taken?" asked Lily after pushing open the compartment door.
The boy in the corner, the only person in the compartment, turned his head to showing a pointed chin, stormy grey eyes and long blond hair. The boy shook his fringe out of his eyes and shook his head, only to slump back down, forehead pressed against the window after they had shut the door. Lily and Hugo decided to ignore the strange boy and started talking animatedly about Hogwarts houses, Hogwarts lessons, Hogwarts teachers and just the castle itself! Soon they were back on the subject of houses.
"Rose is in Ravenclaw, but mum and dad were both in Gryffindor. I don't know where I want to be sorted!" exclaimed Hugo whilst Lily laughed.
"I'm fine, as long as I'm not in Slytherin." Lily said.
"My whole families in Slytherin." said a small voice.
The boy had turned and was watching them.
"I'm so sorry!" squeaked Lily in dismay, clapping a hand to her mouth and blushing to the roots of her fiery hair.
"So am I." whispered the boy.
Lily and Hugo exchanged a look but were saved from answering by a tall, teary girl with a pink face and blond hair in a pixie cut.
"Do you mind if I stay in here?" she sniffed.
Lily patted the seat beside her smiling.
"What's up?" asked Hugo kindly.
"These two people are making fun of me!" She wailed.
"Why?"
"Because I wasn't born to a wizarding family! They keep calling me Mudblood!"
"Don't worry," said Lily patting her arm, "There's nothing wrong with being muggle-born!"
"Muggle?"
"It means non magic folk," Hugo told her. "My mother is muggle born." He added.
Suddenly, there was a bang and the compartment door flew open to show two people, a boy and a girl, sneering at them.
"Ah, I see you've found the filthy Mudblood." spat the girl and the boy grunted.
The pink-faced girl paled and, for some reason, so did the strange boy.
"I'm Delphine and this is my older brother, Arlen" sneered the girl and Arlen grunted.
Hugo stood up, fury written all over his face, and Delphine's stupid grin vanished and morphed into a look of fear. This was one difference between Lily and Hugo, other than the obvious fact that Hugo, taking after Ron, was almost a head taller than little Lily. Hugo was very protective and could get scary easily, whilst Lily was less hot-headed (but more dangerous!) when it came to loosing her temper.
"Leave. Her. Alone" growled Hugo and slammed the door in there frozen faces.
A second later, the door opened again, but it wasn't the dumb duo this time. It was an elderly witch with a kind, smiling face and pushing a cart crammed with sweets! Their worries were soon buried in chocolate frogs, cauldron cakes and pumpkin pasties.
"So, what is your name, anyway?" Asked Lily.
"Penelope Daniels!" Chirped the girl cheerfully.
"Lily Potter, and this is Hugo Weasley." Replied Lily, gesturing to Hugo with her hand.
"Hmm? Oh, howdoo?" Mumbled Hugo around the liqurice wand he had stuffed into his mouth.
They all laughed but the strange boy in the corner. Lily was intrigued by this strange boy but decided that she was too happy to worry about him too much.
Soon they arrived at Hogwarts in their new robes and flourishing new wands.
"Firs'-years! Firs'-years over here! Firs'-years!"
Everybody looked to see the owner of the booming voice, and, to be honest, it would have been hard to miss the giant of a man, his wild, graying hair and beard not quite covering his face.
"All here? Right, follow me! The giant boomed and led them off to the side of the crowd."I'm Hagrid, by the way!"
He led them over to a fleet of tiny boats at the base of the mountain that held Hogwarts Castle. They were told four to a boat, so after the predictable scrambling to get a boat with friends, they were off. Lily and Hugo were joined by a brown haired boy and Penelope. They all jumped as the giant squid that lives in the Black Lake stuck up a tentacle and waved at them. Once they had reached the towering Castle, Hagrid knocked on the doors three times, then they opened to reveal a familiar face peering at them.
"The first years, Professor Longbottom."
