Chapter 23

"Jaehyun! What are you doing here?!" You were slightly mad at him.

"You can't blame me, I don't know if he would hurt you."

You were afraid that Yuta would be angry at Jaehyun for eavesdropping, but he looked unfazed.

"Man, I have no idea how to talk to her. From the way I first met her and her first week in this school, I feel that people are always taking advantage of her! The drunk men trying to harass her, boys courting her just because of her beauty, girls jealous of her because of how welcomed she is. I just thought that no one would mess with her if I treat her this way! I threatened the boys who courted her because I was afraid that they would break her heart, I was mad at every girl who bad-mouthed her behind her back." Yuta's eyes were teary as he turned to me. "I'm sorry...I just—I never knew my sister would leave me one day...I thought I have my whole life to get to know her gradually...After she left, I just don't know what to do anymore...I thought of giving you pocket money like how other brothers would, I thought of buying you your favourite food, I thought of bringing you everywhere ...but I saw how my other friends bully their sisters too...wait not the real kind of bully it's just— I— argh!"

Yuta covered his face and literally wept like a baby.

"Now you know he won't hurt me, so wait for me at the dorm? I'll talk to you when I go back." You told Jaehyun softly. Jaehyun sighed but respected your decisions. As soon as he left with a quick peck on the cheeks, you turned back to Yuta.

"It's her birthday today..."

"So what are we waiting for? Let's go get a cake!"

"A cake?"

"What's a birthday without a cake?"

"But I don't know what does she like..."

"Hmm does she have any social media?"

"Oh she does." Yuta hurriedly grabbed his phone, almost dropping it clumsily. He scrolled through his Instagram and showed you his sister's account.

"Wow...we do look alike." You nodded your head. "Guess she likes cheesecakes."

"What? How did you know?"

"Her pictures with cakes from the last few years are all cheesecakes. Let's go! It's cheesecake time!"

"Cheesecake..." Yuta nodded to himself and left to follow you after grabbing his bag.

Both of you arrived at the graveyard, standing in front of Yuta's sister's gravestone.

"Yuta, say something." You whispered quietly.

"I—I—I don't know what to say..."

Swallowing a lump, you started, "H-hey...I uh, I'm Yuta's friend, I heard that it's your birthday today, so we bought a cake for you!"

Yuta kneeled down and placed the cake, "I miss you so, so much...I hope you're living a better life in heaven..."

"I bet she's smiling happily right now that her brother's here." You smiled at Yuta.

"I promise I'd help you take care of your brother...no I'm not his girlfriend but I'm his friend and that's what friends are for."

Yuta laughed lightly at the 'not his girlfriend' part but was touched by how you said he's your friend when he hasn't been playing the role well.

As the both of you left the graveyard, Yuta seemed to be in a more lively mood. He offered to bring you home and the drive was filled with awkward silence. Standing at the lobby of your dorm, he turned to you.

"So...are we friends?"

"Yuta, you've always been my friend."

A bright and heartfelt smile was plastered on Yuta's face.

You were shocked when he pulled you into a friendly hug but patted him on his back.

Jaehyun who came down to get you, smiled at the scene, Y/N got herself a brother to protect her now.

"I don't mind if you want to give me pocket money though." You chuckled.

Yuta arched his eyebrows and stifled a laugh, "I'll think about it."

"Think about what?"

"Jaehyun! Yuta said he would give me pocket money!"

"Yah, I said I would think about it." He laughed.

Jaehyun took out his hand for a handshake, Yuta was surprised. They hugged in a brotherly way and you couldn't be happier that they were trying to get along for you.

"I bet he's thinking the 'If you break my sister's heart, I'll break your bone' kind of thing."

You rolled your eyes playfully, "I would break your bone myself."
