C H A P T E R F O U RIt was the weekend, and yesterday I had successfully filed up all the needed bills. Rent. Tax. Utility. Healthcare. Insurance. Extracurricular.
I was now broke.
Pay day was in just less than a week, however this little fact did little to soothe my apprehension. The days in between bills and pay were always the worst. I knew how to manage the money effectively now but that didn't meant anxiety didn't keep its leash on me.
But I tried as best I could to push it away. It was Friday and it was the only day of the week I was completely free of both my works and I always spent the day with the kids to wind down.
"Lark, can you brush my hair?"
"Lark, I can't find my orange shorts!"
"Lark, where did my coat go?"
Yep. Winding down alright.
I rubbed the furrow in my brow and shook my head as all three of the kids piled up in front of me. "Uh—Ethan your orange shorts are in the third drawer bottom, it's literally the first thing your gonna see. And Sam your coats hanging on the coat rack under mine. Hand me the brush, Adeline."
"But I checked in the drawers," Ethan whined.
"The third one?" He blinked and then rushed off down the hall. Adeline handed me the brush and elastic and I crouched down to run it through and detangle her hair gently. "What do you want me to do today?"
"I want space buns!"
I laughed and split her hair into two parts before pulling each part up in a ponytail and looping it around themselves till two red buns rested at the top of her tiny little head. I fixed them in with bobby pins and stood up to examine my work. "Go check in the mirror" I flicked my head to our room and she ran off.
"Good!" she yelled back and a small smile played at the ends of my lips.
"Alright, I'm ready," Sam said shrugging on his coat under his hoodie. "What are we doing today anyway?"
I crinkled my nose. "Let's have breakfast and see where it goes from there." The doorbell rang and I flicked my head to the door. "Open the door for Willow."
I watched as a grin started blooming on Sam's face and he practically rushed to open the door for her. Everyone knew of his little crush for her, even Willow herself, it was adorable.
"Hey, baby Larks" she grins as she walks into the door. "And Sammy," she stops in front of him and gives him a little kiss on the cheek. He practically swoons.
"Thank god you're here," I groan. "You think you can handle them for a minute?" I look down at my pajamas. "I still have to get ready."
She rolls her eyes and smacks my ass. "Go girl. I promise you no ones gonna be dead when you get back."
