Hiiiiiiiii! I live, lol. I'm sorry about the bad quality of the last few chapters... I'm also sorry that I haven't updated in a while. Life has been crazy.
On a different note, I've noticed a lack of details on Kaz's mother. ( You can probably see where this is going... ) If I missed some info for this chapter, sorry. I just wanted to write this one. Also, sorry about the long A/Ns all the time. AND THANK YOU FOR SO MANY VIEWS AND COMMENTS!!! Y'ALL ARE AMAZING!
"So, Kaz, when was the last time you slept?"
Kaz glared at the source of the question. Which was, in fact, Colm Fahey. Somehow, Jesper had convinced Kaz to come to the farm with him for a few days. Inej was at sea, Nina was in Ravka, and Wylan was on his way. He had to take care of a few mercher-ish things and would be there tomorrow.
After being ignored, Colm asked again. "I asked, Mr. Brekker, when was the last time you slept?" Kaz held the glare for a moment or two, then, to Jesper's surprise, dropped his gaze and answered quietly, saying "...Thursday." Colm gaped at the boy. "Son... it's Wednesday." Kaz looked back up at him, glaring once again. "I'm well aware of this, Mr. Fahey. And don't call me son" Colm glared back at him, and didn't back down, which was highly unusual of anyone trying to glare at Kaz. But it was Colm Fahey, after all. "First of all, Kaz, I told you to call me Colm. Secondly, you need to sleep. And you are going to sleep right now. You look like you might keel over!" "I never keel over, Mr. Fahey." Jesper was getting nervous. A bullet could cut through this tension. So he did what he did best: he distracted them. "So!" They both looked at him. And his Da was right. Kaz really did look like he was going to keel over, though if Jesper didn't know him well, then he couldn't tell. "Kaz, you like to solve mysteries, so-" "I don't "solve mysteries", Jesper. I pick locks and pluck pigeons." Colm looked affronted, but Jesper was worried. Kaz must really be tired if there was no dramatics in his usual answers. "Oh, same thing. But anyway, this lady named Louise Rietveld was asking around about her husband and two sons, 'cause apparently, they've been missing forever. Know anything, Kaz? You're full of senseless knowledge. "
Kaz put both hands on the table. Colm's face went from mildly interested to alarm when Kaz turned pale ( which is, you know, really pale bc Kaz is a vampire ) "Are you sure you're alright, so-Kaz? We have a spare bedroom-" "Don't call me son. And no...I don't... I actually don't know anything." "Okay, bro. " Kaz looked offended when Jesper called him that. "What?" "You've got to sleep. Or something. When was the last time you ate anything?" "Mmmm... Monday. Maybe? Might've been Sunday." Jesper looked at his Da, who was already moving toward the kitchen. "Well, consider this an intervention. Inej leaves, and you act like a teenager who can't take care of himself." The thought of Inej quieted them both, and there was a long pause. Then Kaz looked up from the table and at Jesper. "Jes.." "Yea?" "Do you actually think that my last name is Brekker?" Jesper twitched, surprised. If he was asking this, then 1, he didn't know himself, or 2, he was trying to tell Jesper that his real last name wasn't Brekker. He went with option 2. Using the context he had and the advantage of Kaz's lack of sleep, he went on a limb and asked "So... is your last name Rietveld?" "Yeah" Jesper was really worried now. Kaz was never this up-front about things. "Kaz." "mm" "Let's continue this conversation in Da's office, okay?" Kaz, being the business person he was, followed without a word.
"This is not an office. "
"No, it's a bedroom. This is a bed. You sleep in it. "
"I know that, you git. I'm not sleeping. "
"Why?"
"I don't want to."
"Kaz you sound like a petulant child. "
"You sound like a petulant child. "
Jesper shook his head. He'd only seen Kaz like this a few times, and that was when Inej could deal with him. Oh, "deal". There we go. "Kaz"
"What, Jordie!? "
Jordie again. Jesper decided he'd ask about that another time, when he was slightly less prone to get murdered. He just needed to talk like he was talking to a small, angry murderous child with touch and trust issues. No biggie. "If you go to sleep now, I won't make you sleep anymore."
"..At all?"
"Not at all. But only if you agree to tell me about Louise. "
Kaz looked slightly betrayed, but his fatigue was getting the better of him.
"Fine. "

After a difficult struggle of making Kaz put one of Jesper's nightshirts on, -Kaz wouldn't put it on, but he did after Jesper told him that he'd make him go to bed the next night, too. Kaz was a child, really- Jesper walked back to the kitchen, where Colm was cleaning and prepping for breakfast the next morning. He smiled at Jesper as he walked into the room. "Nicely done. You were like that yourself, you know. After your mother died." His eyes dimmed a bit, but he still smiled as he looked at Jesper. "You've grown so much." Then he quickly turned back around, measuring water and getting things out so that there would be less to do in the morning. "I understand Wylan'll be here tomorrow? He's a sweet boy. "
Jesper smiled. "Thanks, Da. "
Part two? Probably coming soon. IDK. I procrasinate. =\
