It is Fall.
or at least I think it's fall.
No one really knows for sure anymore but it feels like fall, and thats all that matters. I love fall. I love how the trees have finally started turning again. It took so long for them to grow back, for things to start blooming again. I love the feeling of the air, how you can almost smell the winter coming. I hear crickets chirping. a few red leaves fall before my face so softly, so freely. I smile closing my eyes, and enjoying the scenery around me. Most people thing of fall as the ending of a cycle. But I think of it as a new beginning. a rebirth. And I hate endings, the end of the day most of all. Sunsets signify the end of the day, so I hate sunsets. It depresses me more than I could ever possibly try to explain, and the only way to distract myself from it is to keep myself busy.
The sun is setting, and its time for a rush.
"Ow! What the fuck?" I mouth silently, turning to my sister. I grab the back of my head after registering that she had just thrown a decent sized ROCK at the back of my head.
"Pay attention, were getting close." she whispers innocently, slowly lifting her lips into a familiar smirk. She strutted past me, her dirty blonde pony tail swaying back and forth. I rolled my eyes and raised my gun back to its position in front of my face. The other 4 ahead of me have already lowered their night-vision goggles over their eyes. I roll mine in annoyance before following, putting my goggles on as well and silently catching up to the group. We all keep our eyes peeled for any sign of roamers being near. It would be extremely inconvenient to have to turn back because a herd was blocking our route. It would be way worse, of course, if someone got bit.
The Crest has been low on cures for a while now and its about time for a rush. Last winter was the most severe shortage we've ever had, and what came after was horrifying. Watching the people you have grown up with, old and young, slowly get sick and pass away due to the radiation is almost as disturbing as watching someone turn after being bitten by a roamer. I know that feeling all too well. Not to mention dying from radiation is one of the worst ways to die.
First is the vomiting.
Then hair loss.
After you lose most of your hair you know that there is little anyone can do to help, and death is almost certain. After a week of not taking the cure, you lose your eye-sight. around the same time your skin begins to blister and peel off. I've heard enough screams to know that this stage is excruciatingly painful, but if you're lucky, the radiation will kill you before it gets to that.
My thoughts are halted as my sister throws her hand up. She points to the ground, signaling to stop and get down. The 3 boys crouch in front of me, and I immediately follow. Our bodies huddle together behind the brush, laying side by side, guns propped up against the dirt in front of our faces. I get flash backs to training sessions I had years ago when I first learned how to rush, but now instead of looking at target circles inside of plastic human figurines, I am looking out at an open valley that stretches for miles. Two miles away, in the center of this valley is our target.
Dorset.
This is the most heavily guarded and hardest to invade commune in sector 6, but it is also the closest to our commune, The Crest. We could have taken an easy 3 day trek west to Blackburn, but this was something that just couldn't wait another 3 days. This was a dangerous, as well as time-sensitive rush, so of course my mother delegated the task to me, my older sister Scarlett, Jorren, Thomas, and Danny. Me and my sister basically grew up with these boys. They may be the most annoying and childish people I've ever met, but they were chosen as the top 3 males in sanction 7 for a reason. Sanction 7 being the training group for 19-21 year olds. Scarlett is the rush leader/trainer, and I am the second hand to my mother, so us two being on this mission was a given.
"Alright everyone listen up. Especially you, Thomas, Im not explaining this shit to you again." Thomas frowns and turns to me in mock confusion. My face expressionless, I look past him at my sister who continues to quietly bark orders.
"Were looking at Dorset, the highest security commune any of you 3 losers will ever have the pleasure of getting close to, let alone being inside of." she narrows her eyes at the 3 boys. "Now my mother chose you 3 because you're young, young people are fast, and fast is what we need right now. But what we don't need is fast and stupid... Thomas." Thomas throws his hands in the air dramatically, pretending to be confused why he's the one getting called out.
it's definitely not because last time you went on a rush you BURPED, making everyone within a mile radius aware of our location, and completely ruining the mission.
"If you look 3 miles to the left, you will see a tall watch tower in the distance. Dorset is centered in a 3000 acre valley with no trees or coverage. This may seem like a benefit to us because we can scope out the camp from afar, but this kind of thinking is what will get you killed."
I look through the scope of my sniper rifle, analyzing the night watch from 2 miles away. There were at least 30 men that I could see, all clad in black vests and helmets, stalking up and down the wired fence with their own guns.
"That watch tower's spotlight makes a full revolution every minute. If one of you assholes gets caught in the spotlight, your dead. When the light shines on us, stop moving, and drop to the ground as fast as you can. The suits we're wearing right now should camouflage us into the grass enough to not be spotted. And if not... oops." She smirks again.
"Alright, so whats after that? The longer we lay here exposed, the more I feel like this is a bad idea." Danny pipes up.
"That small building all the way at the right corner of the Dorset is our checkpoint. That is a smaller watch tower for the guards on the fence. Their shift switches every hour." she continues.
"And when is that??" I whisper. Im starting to get the feeling that we're being watched, and Scarlett is pushing it, per-usual.
"That would be in about...20 minutes." she smiles looking down at her watch.
"For fucks sake. So when do we GO, Scarlett?" I ask getting more frustrated by the minute. she looks down at her watch pretending to contemplate. I swear, God created her for the sole purpose of pissing me off.
"NOW!" she jumps up and starts a fast sprint through the field, everyone jumping up to follow.
here goes nothing.
