Willow
I lift myself off of the ground and begin to sprint as fast as I possibly can behind the group, eyeing the watch tower light from a distance, it looks like we have roughly another 30 seconds until the spotlight will hit us. I quickly catch up to Jorren and Thomas, eliminating any head start they had of me.
"Show off" Thomas grunts through his heavy breaths. I just half smile and continue to sprint as fast as my legs will allow. I've always been a great runner. "5 seconds!" Scarlett manages to get out, just audible enough to where we could hear.
"Now!" We all hurdle ourselves to the ground, skidding across the grass. I think I saw Jorren tumble a few times before stopping completely. I laid deathly still facing the ground, trying to hold my breath to keep my chest from moving as little as possible. God, my lungs feel like they're about to explode. Just as I part my lips to take another breath, the light slowly passes over us. It takes about 5 seconds for the portion of the field that we are currently lying in to no longer be illuminated. I lift my head and look around at the same time as everyone else.
Danny looks wide eyed around at us, cracking a smile. "Oh my God, I almost sneezed." He whispers all giddy
"Lets go." Scarlett commands. We get up and begin to sprint again, just about matching the speed of the cast of light moving forward ahead of us.
Eventually, we find ourselves at the small watch tower, heavily panting. We all slowly remove our goggles, now being able to see ahead of us clearly with the glow of lights coming from Dorset.
"Im never doing that again." I mumble trying to catch my breath, wiping the sweat out of my eyes.
"Shh!" Scarlet raises her finger over her mouth, holding her other hand up aggressively. We all slow our breathing and look around the corner of the structure. We are right on time for the guard shift switch. The black-suited man skips down the stairs and saunters off, completely oblivious.
"405 leaving watch tower 6, over." He speaks into his radio. As soon as he is just far enough away to be out of listening-reach, Scarlett digs in her bag, pulling out a small blueprint map. Her pointer finger gestures to a structure on the map that looks to be about 40 yards away from us now.
"Inside this building is everything we need. The list my mother gave me says we need to get pain medication, gauze, syringes, and most importantly..." she emphasizes, "20 boxes of cures. If something goes wrong, remember the cures are the most impor-"
...crunch...
We all duck and look into the darkness, guns raised. It's quiet... too quiet. Danny slowly raises his goggles over his eyes, careful not to make too much movement.
"LOOK OU-" I immediately clamp my hand over his mouth. Jorren yelps in shock as a roamer sprints forward out of the shadows, flailing its lifeless arms and clawing at him from behind and taking him down. Eyes wide, I try to keep myself from screaming as I watch the scene before me. Jorren was laying under the flesh-eating creature. I saw flashes of hands flying as it tried to maul his face with its fossilized teeth, making terrible gurgling noises. Scarlett jumps to action pulling out her silent pistol and firing it at the creature. The soulless body slumps to the ground, lying limp on top of Jorren. Dark, thick blood drips from the blistered and rotten skull into his dark brown hair.
