Ally Haney: Being Scared To Be AtheistAlly Haney is an atheist. This is only coming out now as the 28-year old singer was too busy and scared to tell anyone.
Ally was born Christian. She had followed the religion her whole life. She even started out with a Christian inspired album. But in the past decade, her views have changed and she isn't too sure about her parents reaction.
Here is our E! Exclusive with Ally Haney.
I: When did you first start to feel differently about your beliefs?
Ally: It started around the time I was eighteen. That was the time when people started to cyberbully me because of making a Christian album, but I tried not to let it get to me.
I: What was the big turning point for your religion?
Ally: I started to realize that many Christians became hypocrites. You weren't a real Christian unless you went every Sunday. You weren't innocent in the eyes of God, if you wore a short dress. God didn't like Vixens. It became absolutely ridiculous, so I sort of just stopping wanting to be Christian because everyone else wanted to ruin it for another. It was stupid.
I: What did your parents say when you told them you wanted to convert?
Ally: At first, they were a little hesitant about it, trying to give me a lesson about why I should stay Christian, but eventually, they started to open up to the idea of me converting. It obviously was hard for them, seeing as how they are pastors and I had always been such a big part of the church. I always sang and wrote songs about my faith, but they know that I'm a grown woman and are letting me handle this decision like I am one and for that, I am grateful.
I: Do you ever feel like you should stay Christian?
Ally: Sometimes, I kind of want to go back to my old roots. To feel like my normal fifteen year old self again, but I know that my views on life have definitely changed in the past thirteen years.
I: Why did you decide that Atheist was the best choice for you?
Ally: With all the religions that exist in the world. I could have picked any one of them, but I knew that I couldn't exactly agree with another religion as I had been taught one my whole life. Atheism isn't a religion, more of a choice. There is no fighting of whether that is right or not. It's simply a place where you can be yourself and don't need to have an entitled opinion.
I: Is Atheism something that you are willing to commit to?
Ally: Absolutely. I want to live in world where we don't have to fight over skin color, sexuality, or gender. A place where we can be whoever we want to be. When I want to do something, I commit to it. I'm willing to do that. Whatever it takes.
Currently, Ms. Haney is working on a group for fellow converts, hoping to let others know that it's okay to be yourself. Her choice has become a big part of her life and her parents are much more open to it, as of now.
Special Notes: Ally Haney is a real person. This girl had trouble accepted her birth religion, but is happy that she now can be herself freely. Her views in this interview are real. I do ask these people these same questions and write out their responses. She does believe some religions are hypocritical and she's perfectly happy being an atheist.
