FARIDA
"There's something I need to tell you." He states, letting out a very heavy sigh. I wonder what it is, though. One part of me tells me to ignore him, another one tells me to stand up and leave, the third part says to just go to the flow.
"Alright." I finally reply him as he has been looking at me expectantly.
"So uhm.about what happened in Gombe." He states and I roll my eyes in annoyance.
"I am sorry." He states. I look at him and laugh at his sorry apology.
"I have told you to stop apologizing, I'm fine. There's nothing to be sorry about."
"Yet, you're still in a sour mood."
"But we have never been all smiles with each other." I point out the fact. What a ridiculous point from him.
"Yeah, I never said we were. It just wasn't this bad." He states. I would agree with him on that but he should cut me some slack. I didn't cause anything.
"Do you even know what you are sorry about?"
"Wishing you dead. Of course, that's the only thing he sees wrong. How about all the other countless disrespectful things he has done?"
"See, Farida." He says, letting out a deep breath. Wawu, so he even knows my name?
"I know I spoke out of line and I am really sorry. That was too low and I admit I went too far. Also, I disrespected you that day. I am truly sorry." This time, he has made his way to sit on the table in front of me.
"Okay." I don't know what else this man wants me to do.
"Am I forgiven? Please?" He asks and watches me, waiting for an answer.
"Yes." I state.
"Genuinely?" He asks.
"Yes." If it would help, I lift my lips in a small smile and he lets in a breath, visibly relaxing. I watch as he walks back to take his seat. As if something comes to his mind, he stands up quickly and walks towards his office cupboard to retrieve a small jewellery box.
"Hey, I got you this while thinking of apologizing to you." He hands it over to me. I would be lying if I say I am not shocked.
"Open it." I do as he says and gasp. How did he know? It's an anklet and a very beautiful one.
"This is beautiful." I state, eyeing the anklet and giving it my 1 minute of admiration.
"But this looks quite expensive." I state, still eyeing the beauty in my hands.
"You like it, you know you do. It will not kill you to admit you like it, Farida. Just take it." It's the same thing my inner mind is telling me.
"Thank you." I accept the gift because it will not be proper to refuse it. Lie lie. My inner thoughts mock me.
"You're welcome. Thanks for accepting the gift." He says.
"You're welcome." I respond.
"Can we at least be cordial with each other?" He asks, taking me by surprise. Ah! Did this man hit his head somewhere?
"By cordial, you mean? I just need to be clear." He seems taken aback by my question.
"No snide comments, no fights, no exchange of words."
"Most especially, not hurtful words." I add.
"Agreed." He says and I smile.
"You have no choice." I state as a matter of fact.
