Madison
Andrew and I walked for what seemed like hours, in no particular direction, but swiftly still. Each time that I cocked my head up to look at him, he smiled and continued to drag me along; I knew he could see the worry in my eyes, because frankly, I was scared to death of him. My small hand gripped his firmly and when I squeezed he pretended like he didn’t notice.
Who is he? Why is he dressed so funny? Where is he taking me?
“We’re going to find out how to get you to ascend.” It was as if he could read my mind.
“What does ass—end, mean?” He chuckled and the sound came from deep within his belly; “It means that your soul will have the ability to fly up with the angels.”
“Angels?”
“Yes, Madison— they’re those things with the wings that you’ve probably seen in movies or on television.”
“But, I don’t want to go with the Angels; I want to go with my mama!”
We stopped walking and Andrew kneeled in front of me. He brushed my dark curls from my face and flicked away a tear drop that began to slide its way down my cheek.
“You will see your mama in due time. Right now, we have to figure out why you’re here, with me, instead of in Heaven.”
“Why can’t I go home now?” I snatched my hand from his and hugged myself. Everything around me was so beautiful; there were no clouds in the sky, the grass looked as though each blade was colored with a Crayola crayon and the air smelled sweet, like heated honey, but I felt displaced. I knew that I didn’t belong there, and Andrew prolonged my stay by dragging me to an unknown location, amongst freakishly tall flowers.
“Listen. I know that you have many questions, but I can only explain them as we go along.”
Then there was a noise.
I jumped, nervously, but Andrew seemed as calm as ever—“its okay, Madison; this is where we were headed to.”
He stood up and dusted his knees off and reached out for my hand once again. Reluctantly, I gave it to him and we marched onward, only reaching a few feet before a man magically appeared right before our very eyes. I screamed, and ran behind Andrew, using him as a human shield.
“Madison, it’s okay, this is our friend Daniel.”
I peeked my head out to see a man, much larger than Andrew, who was dressed in what seemed like rags. His white hair was pulled back into a low, tight, ponytail and his eyes were the lightest blue that I’ve ever seen.
“Hello Maddie, I am Daniel, a servant of God.” He reached his hands out to me and Andrew moved aside and pushed me forward, into Daniel’s embrace.
The old man smelled like happiness. It’s the only way that I can describe the light floral scent that surrounded me, instantly, when he hugged me.
“Well, aren’t you a lovely lady? Andrew and I will make sure that you ascend in a timely manner.”
“Will I be able to see my mama?”
“Yes dear, but you must learn how to teleport first.”
“How do I do that?”
Daniel turned to Andrew—“Shall we begin?”
“Of course.”
