Battle rang loud across the moor. Loud yowls, hissing, and screeches could be heard from beyond. There were several different cats, too many for one warrior to recognize. Cats tackled each other with a flurry of claws and bared fangs. The grass beneath the clan cats were stained red in blood.
Amongst the fighting cats, a large grey tom, and a fluffy calico she-cat were separated from the ongoing battle. The calico was lying on the ground, blood pooling below her, while the tom had both paws on her shoulders. Her throat had been ripped open. Her green eyes flashed in anger, shock, and sadness as she stared up at the blue eyed tom. The grey feline's muzzle and paws were coated in blood. Breathing heavily, he stepped off of her, his eyes clouding in regret. He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out but a gasp.
I'm sorry it had to come to this.
"I..." he started, at a loss for words. He continued to stare at the molly, grimacing as her body stiffened for a moment, before going still. He winced as she gasped for air, clawing at the ground. She was loosing her lives.
The calico clawed at the bloody grass below her, a painful gasp escaping her. "I don't— I don't want to die." She choked out. Her flank rose and fell shakily as she stared up at the tom. He stared back.
"I- I know you don't." He looked away for a moment. He then touched his cheek to her muzzle.
A tightness in his chest formed. He could feel tears welling up in his eyes. "You're going to be okay...close your eyes...you'll be in StarClan." He whispered gently, "...you'll see your parents again- and your sister." He pressed his muzzle harder against her cheek, his voice wavering, "We'll meet again in StarClan."
But, she was already gone. Her chest no longer rose and fell. Her green eyes stared empty into the horizon.
His belly churned at the sight of the dead she-cat. The grey leader took a deep couple of breaths, before momentarily looking across the moor again. The two clans were still fighting.
The tom backed away, his tears falling onto her pelt. His ears perked as he heard a yowl of horror from the distance. Her warriors. The tom gave one last look, before letting out a loud screech, "ThunderClan, retreat!" He turned, racing away from the moor without a second glance, his clan-mates at his heels as they fled.
As he ran, he heard the familiar wail of the calico's deputy. A shiver ran down his spine as he crossed the border. It was a haunting reminder of the price paid for ThunderClan's defeat.
He silently pleaded with StarClan to show him mercy.
Forgive me, StarClan.
