The past week has been extremely awkward, like see-each-other-in-the-halls-and-awkwardly-blush-and-wave-weirdly-while-everyone-is-watching kind of awkward. What can they expect? A cursed student like me is obviously gonna be an awkward student. I didn't know Merula could be so awkward, but apparently she is. Alright, I'm the awkward one. When she sees me, she's either kinda nice or, "Well what do you want, Y/N?"
Today was the only day she was actually super awkward. Like Elodie and Jillian from trinkets kind of awkward. Cute together, but awkward. Today we sat across each other on the Slytherin table at breakfast.
"Oh, hey!" I waved once she sat down with her food. Today's portion was a lot more than usual, so she was probably super hungry, and oddly, I wasn't.
"Hey," Merula picked up her fork and let it rest on her plate before eating. "What'd you get for breakfast?"
I picked up my plate and showed her because my eggs were already in my mouth, and it'd be pretty disgusting if I talked.
"Eggs and toast?" Merula laughed, and Jesus Christ, I loved that laugh. "Not even bacon? You're so boring, Y/L/N."
I finally swallowed my eggs, which gave me the ability to speak again.
"Anyway, uh..." I didn't really know what to say now that I had the chance to speak. "So what happened the other day, you're cool with it?"
"Saturday?" Merula gave me a look that made me know what I said was incredibly stupid. Like I said, I'm awkward. I'm the awkward one here, not her. "Honestly, I dunno if I can anymore. If you're stupid enough to think that I wasn't, then you clearly can't be dating me anymore, Y/L/N."
I wanted to be a little more quiet because we were in the middle of a whole school that could hear us. Probably not, but you've always gotta be careful.
"We're..." I started very quietly, but not to the point of a whisper. "Dating...?"
Merula looked a bit surprised at what I said. Or at what she said a few moments ago. "Well, no. Yes. No... Yeah, to be honest, I dunno." She paused, and I waited for her to continue speaking. She got back to talking again. "I mean, I'd be okay with it if we did..."
"I mean, I'd be fine with it-" I began, but with Tonks being herself, she walked right up to the Slytherin table.
"Oh, heyyyyyy Maya and Merula!" Tonks looked at both of us, and then took a seat next to me. "Soooooo... Breakfast date?"
I was embarrassed a ton, so the only thing left to do was glare at Tonks. "Shut up."
"You told her that you-?" Merula also started, but Tonks once again interrupted.
"Nah, she just told me that she liked you... Like more than a friend."
Merula stared at me angrily. Basically, it was her everyday face. Strait but curved eyebrows, a slightly wrinkled nose, and a I-won't-turn-my-frown-upside-down.
"You-" She failed to begin again, because I had to interrupt her like the great person I was.
"What was I supposed to do? I liked you, and I obviously had to tell someone... Or all of my friends- Anyway, you can keep a secret can't you, Tonks? You haven't told anyone about what I told you, right?"
"Welllllll..." Tonks was smiling, and she probably shouldn't have been, knowing how Merula gets when she's angry.
"Tonks!" I kinda hit my hand on the table by accident, leading to a soft, "Ahhhhh..." that hopefully nobody heard.
"I can't believe it, now everyone's gonna know that I like the cursed student." Merula shook her head. "Although... The cursed student is also into me... That could have more upsides than downsides..."
While Merula kept thinking, I made angry eye contact with Tonks, letting her know she's made everything awkward. Like anyone, she decided it was just time to go back to the Hufflepuff table.
"Y'know, I'm still kinda hungry. I'm gonna go get some more eggs." With that, she ran off.
"Whatever," Merula said. "I'm not gonna let the other prankster get in my way of being with you."
"The second prankster?" I asked. "Who's the first?"
"Tulip Karasu..." Merula whispered, and for a whisper, it was quite loud. "Hate her.
"You two aren't friends?" I asked. Who was she again?
"It's a long story, can't believe I was actually her friend." Merula didn't loudly whisper this time. "We used to actually date for a while."
"You did?" I was a little bit shocked. I thought they were best friends.
"Well, I hate to admit it, but I prefer you," Merula played with the fork in her hands, trying to avoid looking at me for the moment because she wasn't great at saying complements like that. "Anyway, wanna meet in your dorm soon? I'm gonna be bored today, cause it's like a Saturday with nothing to do."
"Uh, sure?" I said. "What for?"
"To spend time..." Once again, Merula wasn't going to be able to be all complementary. "Or to fix that hair of yours. It's so messy."
"I don't think you should be talking!" I laughed.
Merula did that angry stars once again.
"It's a joke!" I laughed harder. "It's a joke!"
Merula chuckled a bit. I don't see it much, so I loved it when it happened. "Fine, it was a little funny."
