Distant Memories

I watched as the clouds in the sky gently moved with the wind.

I was sitting in the grass, up a hill, just enjoying the sun on my skin. I could say I had a good life; my parents worked at a farm and made sure I wouldn't be without basic needs. I would help them once in a while, but they preferred if I just enjoyed the day and my teenage life. I was thankful to have them as parents.

I looked into the horizon, my eyes following a cloud just before it disappeared.

- Boo!

I got up, startled and watched as she rolled in the grass laughing.

- You should have seen your face! It was as if you saw a titan!

- Hey now I didn't know you were coming, I was surprised that's all.- I said as I scratched my head.

- Why are you here though, what a waste of time. - she said bluntly.

- I'm the one who should ask that, shouldn't you be working?

- It's my day off... and tomorrow is too. Instead of lazing around here how about you visit my town tomorrow?

- I'm not lazing around, I'm enjoying my teenage years, sir. - I placed my closed hand above my heart, saluting.

- Seems like you dedicate your heart to laziness. Just come to my town tomorrow alright? No excuses!

- Fine!

Trost district was just like I remembered. It's been a while since I had been there, but the picturesque houses and busy streets were the same as always.

Since I was used to the tranquility of the inner fields of Wall Rose, every time I would visit one of the towns I would feel a little anxious.

Especially since we were so close to the wall.

I've always been amazed on how big it was. I remember asking my parents, when I was of age of making questions, how it was possible to build something so tall. I don't think they answered me directly – or gave any precise answer to it. So I've kept this thought on the back of my mind, wondering if I would ever know the answer.

- Spacing out again?

My friend, sporting a malicious smile, was standing right behind me. I turned around to face her and placed my hands on my hips.

- You're late. Again.

- Of course I am, have you not know me enough to know that much? – she let out with a laugh. – Anyway let's go to my place.

I followed her through the streets, observing everything around me as I walked. I heard the unmistakable sound of the 3D maneuver gear and looked beyond some buildings, spotting a few soldiers flying in between them.

It had always left me with a sense of wonder. How brave had someone to be, to want to be a soldier and being face to face with a titan.

I most certainly wouldn't want to see a titan right in front of me.

Ever.

The sound was getting more audible, with a few more flying through. One of them passed right above us and I flinched.

- Don't worry, they're just getting to the walls for the usual patrol. There aren't titans coming to eat us.

I knew she was just teasing me, but I still felt uneasy. Seeing that her joke wasn't well received, she grabbed my hand.

- There's a lot of people here so don't get lost, alright? Let's go.

_________

We found a bench and sat next to each other, while eating what we had brought from her house.
