BranchesAs you are told throughout the series, everybody has a branch of magic. It's usually just called branch.
The type of branch is individualized to each person based on genetics and sometimes the area they're surrounded in. Royals tend to have more powerful branches since they are able to access the tools needed to extend their limits.
Familiars and Synchs
For those who don't know, familiars are creatures that help individuals with their magical abilities.
A famous example would be a witch's cat.
In this world, familiars are very similar. One difference is that the familiars only live as long as their owners do once they bond. They often showing up as a baby within a week of a person's birth. Familiars cannot be gifted to a person.
Familiars here are often utilized as companions, helpers, magic-stores, service-animals, travel, and very rarely labor.
Those who have more than one familiar, like Eris, are usually those with a very strong branch. While it sounds like it'd be physically taxing, it's often like owning two dogs (or cats, it depends on what creatures the familiars are).
To be clear: Familiars are never humanoids. To have a humanoid creature bond with you is a "synch" rather than a familiar.
Synchs can be gifted. Synchs are not reliant on the owner's lifespan. Synchs can think for themselves.
