Tiny bubbles begin to form in her eyes. Was she... crying?

Before I can think of something to say, she throws her arms around me and buries her face in my chest as she sobs into my shirt.

"I'm sorry, I should have known better. I knew well enough to help you see but breathing is obviously more important! You almost died and it's all my fault!"

I begin stroking her back and reply "It's okay. You didn't do anything wrong."

"But all I wanted was to have fun with a human and didn't stop to think about what you needed. I'm a selfish brat."

On hearing this, I took her by the shoulders, causing her to take a break in her sobs and look up at me, her sorrowful eyes nearly breaking my heart.

"You asked me for a swim, and I was more than happy to oblige. It's not everyday I get an offer like that, much less from a girl, and even less often from a mysterious sea maiden. You're far from a selfish brat, you're a miracle."

The girl is still for a moment before she takes me in an impassioned embrace, nuzzling into my side and letting out a simple but heartfelt "Thank you."

Eventually she eases off and we're left standing together on the seabed, the distorted rays of sunshine having grown scarce and faint by this point.

"You know... it gets pretty cold down here at night."

I look down at her with equal parts bemusement and intrigue. "Do you know someplace warm we could spend the night?"

The girl takes on a knowing grin and replies: "I've got just the place!"

Once again, she offers me her hand, but this time I don't hesitate to take it.
