August drew closer and closer to September until it was finally time to get out of this miserable atmosphere and somewhere where other people were actually acting like they were alive. Then it all comes back to the chaotic step-siblings: school sucks, and so do all the people in it if you were a 'nerd' and a 'freak'. Except for maybe all the kids Neil used to know from camp. Keyword: 'used'.
Nerris had grown a hatred against Max, and a vendetta with Harrison, who was one of the few campers who had something good happen in their life (his brother, somehow, had come back; but this didn't stop his parents from being absolutely terrified of him).
Preston was now always in and out of the hospital. Not for himself, of course, but for his grandma, who was now terminally ill. Sometimes, on the occasions where Nikki broke or fractured something he'd see the sad theatre kid.
He used to sit on the floor with him, and he hugged his knees while venting about it all. It was only a matter of time, he said. Neil feels sympathy for the poor guy, like everyone else. As much as everyone hates him still not knowing what an inside voice was, no one wants to be mean to Preston.
Nurf was now in therapy to cool his anger issues, and his mother was now a free woman. She still seemed to make a lot of mistakes, but at least she tried to be a good mother, unlike a certain woman. Neil spies Candy as he spoons his cereal into his mouth.
Nikki energetically throws her bowl and spoon - plastic, because we don't trust her with porcelain and she keeps bending the spoons - into the kitchen sink with a clatter. She then bounced off to get ready for the first day of hell- I mean, freshman year.
Neil knew it was going to be bad. It's not as if he based his knowledge purely on movies and musicals (even though Heathers, Jawbreaker and Mean Girls don't set a very good reputation), but his mom's new step-son was in the second year of Sleepy Peak high school, and he was a full-on drug dealer, so, this leads him to the hypothesis that it can't be that good.
He pulled on a white turtleneck and then a blue-and-white flannel over it, because Nikki told him to - she had only grasped a small awareness of fashion after talking about it with Ered - and he doesn't want to look like someone who worships Xemüg. Also the trademark skinny jeans, in black this time, he can't forget them.
Flinging on his black messenger bag that his dad insisted on buying - because they had to match, Neil called after Nikki who has now dashed to the nearest bus stop, conveniently situated one block away.
Right on cue, the yellow bus stopped at a halt with an ugly screech like nails on a chalkboard. Neil thinks it reminds him of the Quartermaster's bus, so he inwardly smiled, fondly. Then he remembered all the roaches and grime that covered every inch of the godforsaken vehicle. He shakes his head.
Jumping on, the hyperactive bluenette (bluenette? greenette? turqousette?) greets the bus driver with a smile. The man looks miserable and as if he hates kids - Neil doesn't blame him because the kids on the bus are so rowdy, already. Seriously? Most of them barely knew each other and the bus goes around to pick people up for about half an hour, so how have people already separated into cliques?
Neil eyes all of the groups and his subconscious recalls the cafeteria scene from Mean Girls. He was forced to watch it all the time, and by separate people, no less.
Eyes drifting over the crowds, he sees Nurf at the back of the bus with another guy. He has hazel hair and eyes along with a similar build as the ginger.
Harrison and Nerris were separated by Preston in the middle and Nikki was already sat in the back next to some lonely looking guy staring through the greasy window. He can't see much of him.
