The End welcomes them. The radiance of magic that settled across X-Dee's being is something they always miss, always longed for as it is the feeling of Home, of the place they were born. A connection to the End that despite the home and family they made in the Overworld, it could never compete.
They took a breath; the cool air of the End wasn't all that different than the tundra they had just been in. It was why X-Dee, and Dream, had enjoyed spending time in colder climates, it reminded them of home.
Still, X-Dee floated to the centre of the island where their mother had made her nest. Mother raised her scaly head with a welcoming rumble.
"Hello hatchling, it has been some time," she purred, resting her jaw in their hands.
X-Dee called upon an extra set to scritch at her scales, increasing the volume of their mother's purring.
"I'm sorry for not coming sooner," they hesitated a beat, "...A lot has...happened these last few months. Some mortals thought to lock up my mortal self but...the prison wasn't...unfinished."
Her purple gaze sharpened, purr trailing off abruptly, "Oh? I suppose it did not end well for your mortal form."
X-Dee said nothing, just wilted, resting their cheek against her snout.
"My apologies, my hatchling."
"It is okay, the form is now a ghost," they explained, "So I can still blend in with those that do not know...My...my memories are also a bit all over the place. I can...my death affected me even in this form. I have more like this, but they are still so...scattered."
Mother exhaled, her warm breath smothering them, and X-Dee sighed happily at the feeling. A form of comfort they liked to bask in.
"When you were last here, I can recall you mentioning some other ghosts, yes? Of people you consider family?"
X-Dee perked up, "Yes, Wilbur and Uncle Schlatt..." they frown, that conversation from the In-Between coming to them again, "I spoke to them. In the—In the In-between, and oh!"
It was like a lantern went off above their head, "The revival book! I could bring them back!" They drew back, wings flapping as they beamed up at Mother, "I know both of them consented, and Glatt already knows about the book, so I just need to speak to Ghostbur!"
A happy and relieved, with a smidge of hysterical excitement, giggle escaped.
Mother chuckled, "The In-between is a strange place, all those souls and the lingering ones. It must have been a sight."
"It was—" X-Dee's throat clogged up.
("Hello, my dear."
She wore all elegant black, her wide brim hat held a veil over her face, but he could make out the faint features of her face. Dark but kind eyes, black lips—
Dream blinked slowly; realisation slow to set in. His thoughts...lethargic, "Hi," is his breathless response.
She laughs softly, sliding one of her hands from her sleeves and offered it to him, "Have no fear youngling, your time is far from over."
Dream reached out his hand, laying it onto of hers. Her hand is as cold as ice, yet in no way is it unpleasant. Maybe that was just because of who Dream was, or maybe it was just...her, the Mistress of Death, the famous wife of the Angel of Death, one of the first gods that walked this earth.
She turned to her left, Dream followed, hands still linked, and she led Dream to a strange door that opened with a hiss.
"You likely won't remember this for a while, youngling," her voice is still as soft, fond and Dream's chest aches; he could feel her love pouring from her very being, "But know nothing is ever as it seems, yes?"
Mutely, Dream nodded and released her hands to step into the odd contraption. The doors closed suddenly and with another hiss, sending a billowing cloud of smoke into the air, the thing began to move.
He took a breath and found a seat, anxiously messing with his fingers.)
X-Dee came back to themself very suddenly and abruptly, choking on a breath.
"Hatchling?" Mother's concerned voice filled their ears.
They gave a hard blink, absently wondering when they had fallen to their knees, before turning to face Mother again. She rumbled and they lent on her snout, nuzzling into her as they worked through their bewilderment.
"I... remembered something. Mistress Death! She came to see me." Their cheeks warmed, "Oh, I'm honoured."
Mother chuckled.
