Willpower
God's mills grind slow but sure...
Or so they say, but it's been 3 weeks, and since the incident from the day I joined, nothing really has been going on. The only bigger issue was about some monster hounds running around in town, but they didn't harm anyone so there hasn't been any action going on lately.
Eduard has been patched up and is ready for action as well, but it is pointless if there is no action. " There are times like these. It is pretty boring and frustrating, but we must not let our guard down. This same thing happened a few months before. We let our guard down, and now take a look at the wall on the western side. They never fixed it I guess. " said Eduard. It is true, that wall on the western side of the Sandgate Hold has a large hole on it. I think that a large number of monster hounds have broken it down.
It's been one full month since I joined the military. Just as I thought that there wouldn't be any more action, the alarm went off. We had to report by the cafeteria, where the Sergeant Major told us that a couple of monster hounds broke into an underground facility by the eastern edge of the city. Also, he told us that there are dangerous chemicals in that facility and that we better hurry up unless we want the full city to be infested by radiation.
We took our guns (I took an enchanted assault rifle) and headed to the garage where we got into our cars. As we drove through the city, I observed the city well. [It is very similar to New York City, except the eastern, destroyed part which resembles... well, nothing since it's destroyed and only the remains of the buildings can be seen there.
Danger Zone
30 minutes later we arrived at the facility. It was called the "Tyloford Research Department". we broke into the building but we only saw dead officers and some broken walls. As we went down the stairs (since the elevator didn't work) we saw more and more dead bodies and dust. " What the fuck happened here? " asked Sergeant Vlad - another friend I made during those boring times. " Hey hey, are we sure that just a couple of dogs could do this amount of damage? " said Colonel Eduard. The place looked like it was about to collapse. We only heard faint running in the distance and the never-ending sound of the alarm.
We arrived at the deepest level. Since neither of us saw any monster hounds yet, we took our guns and approached the hallway very carefully. " They are just hiding, keep your guard up. " said the Sergeant Major. As we opened the door, we saw nothing but blood. " Move to the door on the right ."
We approached the first door and opened it carefully. We saw 2 monster hounds munching on a dead person. the Sergeant Major walked there silently, took an enchanted dagger, and sliced the two monster hounds' necks.
The next one is the room opposite this one. We opened the door but we didn't see anything in there. When we left the room, we heard two monster hounds shout at us from the distance. Around the end of the hallway, there was a final room. The two monster hounds probably came out from in there. They shouted, one of them came running towards us, the other one ran into the room, probably to warn the others. I quickly shot the one that was running towards us with my assault rifle. We began to run after the other one.
When we entered that room, there were broken chemicals all over the place. There were toxic ones as well, so we evaded those. As we entered the next room, we spotted 5 angry monster hounds. They charged at us, but the Sergeant Major cut 3 of them with his knife. The last two were shot by Sergeant Vlad and me. We entered the last room. There was a big hole in the wall. It looks like it was made by a human... or a monsterman. [ The monstermen are basically humanoid and intelligent monsters. You can learn more about them in the prologue's "monster society" chapter. ] We humans haven't seen a single monsterman since the war. We went through that hole.
We ended up in the back of the facility. " It seems that we lost track of them ". said Corporal Cosmin. " But that hole wasn't something a damn dog could dig up. It was either a human or a monsterman ". said Corporal Eduard. " Why would a human do this though? And why would a monsterman be here? It just doesn't make sense. " said Sergeant Vlad. " I'll look into this later. Let's get back to the fort for now ". said Sergeant Major.
The trip back took half an hour. It was 7 PM by the time we got back to the fortress. I read some newspaper in my room, and I saw an article by the name "monsterman spotted in Fibeth County (the region next to Hallowfield County, which is where Tyloford City is located ). I was just about to take these newspapers to the Sergeant Major when the announcer told me to report at his office. When I arrived at the office, he said " Good to see you, Private Miron ". " Nice to see you too, Sergeant Major Cristopher. I wanted to show something to you ". " Great. I want to discuss something too. " I sat down to the chair opposite from the Sergeant Major.
" I saw this article in this newspaper from 2 weeks ago. It says that a monsterman had been spotted in Fibeth County. " " If this is true, then we are in trouble. The monsterman didn't win the war because of their strength. They won it because of their intelligence. They are very strategic monsters. " said the Sergeant Major. " So, what did you want to discuss with me, Sergeant Major? " " I would like to offer you a promotion. " said the Sergeant Major with a cheerful voice. I was shocked. " A promotion? But it is very early! " If you don't want it, you can turn it down. Besides, you deserve, you have shown to us not once that you are capable of helping your comrades. " " Ah... Well, thank you very much, Sergeant Major. I accept it. " " I am glad to hear that, Specialist Miron. "
And with that, I am now a Specialist.
And that concludes the second part of Assistance. In the next part, you will be reading about the past of Miron Zervou, and many more characters. Thank you for reading!
