Hollow Path

It's been one month and a half since I joined the military in Tyloford City. Since the incident ( and my promotion ) half a month ago, we had been researching in monstermen around our region. However, even with all this research, we couldn't find anything except a few newspapers from a few months ago that featured sighted monstermen around many regions. 

Today, the Sergeant Major sent me and Eduard to interrogate the people of Fibeth County, the region east of Hallowfield County. I also protested that we should go to Harvest County too since there have been sightings as well, but the Sergeant Major refused.

" Let's get to the car. You'll drive " said Eduard, and passed me the key. We got in one of the cars (those resemble something like an old jeep), and we got on the road. As I drove down the road, I noticed many people in the countryside, living homelessly. The road was terrible, and the horizon looked like a wasteland. That is of course excepted after all those terrible weapons the monstermen used.

As we got closer to Fibeth, the roads became better and better. The monstermen luckily never reached Fibeth, so at least that region is still clear.

We reached the first city in Fibeth. It's called Saintrun. It's a pretty small city, or rather, a village. We arrived at the marketplace. A couple of people were waiting for us. We got out of the car and walked to them.

" Are you guys with Tyloford Military?  " asked one of the guys. He was slightly tall (higher than me at least). " Yeah. Nice to meet you " said Eduard. He easily befriended all kinds of people. " We are from the military force of Vindobona, the largest town of Fibeth. I hear you guys want to get some intel on the monsterman sightings around here?  " asked the other guy, who wasn't that tall. " That's right  " said Eduard, with a little bit of excitement in his voice.

We got into their car then drove off to a countryside forest. There were some houses around there so I'm guessing it's some kind of small town. We walked a bit until we arrived at someplace that seems like the middle of the forest.

" This is where the monsterman was last sighted. That was 1 week ago. " said the tall guy, whose name was Beryx. " The incident with the facility happened 2 weeks ago. It actually might have been a monsterman " I said to Eduard, to which he replied " But why would a monsterman be out here? I thought they all went back to Shaurus or whatever the name is of that monsterman nation. " 

We investigated the place but we didn't find anything. Just when we were about to head back, some hikers came running down a nearby mountain. It looks like they approached us.

" Are you from the military?? Listen, there are some monstermen up in the mountain! You got to do something about them! " said one of the hikers, then continued running. " Just perfect. " sighed one of the guys with the other military. We ran back to their car and grabbed some weapons. But there were only spears, and the enchantment on them wasn't that high. " What do you fight those monsters with? Some spears like this can't be enough " said Eduard, a bit annoyed by the weapons. " We at Vindobona use pure magic against monsters "

We took the car and began to go for the mount. At the it's middle, there was a cave. We went in, very carefully. At the end, we met some kind of stronghold built inside. There was a monsterman guiding it. He was at least 190 cm tall, had black fur all around him ( even bigger around the head part ) had two wolf ears, 4 green eyes, but he didn't have any weapons. We guessed that he used magic. We tried to throw a rock to the wall to distract him, but when the rock hit the wall he didn't even notice it. We and the guys from the other army agreed that we non-magic-users will distract him, and the magic-users will kill him while he chases us.

Delight of Magicians

We ran to the center of his sight and shouted at him. He began to walk towards us. "łêe!" he shouted as he began to run after us. He began to cast some kind of magic since his hand started to burn slowly. Both of his hands lit on fire and started burning heavily. Meanwhile, the other guys started to cast magic, too. " Halt before me, Deus! " shouted Beryx, and summoned something like a rifle. " Hold him down! " " How do you expect us to do that?? " shouted Eduard in response to Deryx's instructions. In the end, we didn't need to hold him down, since Deryx shot him in the head. " Great job there. " said Eduard as he complimented Beryx.

We went inside the stronghold. The structure was very weird. There were doors everywhere. Those doors led to another hall full of doors, and so on.

After  30 minutes of walking, we ecountered a couple of monstermen in one of the halls. We quickly hid before they could see us. " It's boring here. I wish they could have appointed us to post 56 or 304. Besides, not like anyone would break in here. " said one of the monstermen. His voice was very deep and sharp. " I agree with you, but all those other posts are taken by our seniors. And we are far from the homeland anyway. We are in the cruel land of humanity. " Cruel? They have been the ones that won the war with all their toxic weapons. They are the cruel ones.

" We have to deal with those monstermen somehow, or else we might not get out of here. I heard that their hearing abilities are perfect. " said Beryx. " Damn, what are we even doing here? Only 5 of us won't be enough for a whole stronghold. " said one of the guys from Vindobona. " You're right. We have to bring the whole military. " said Beryx as a response. " But what are we going to do if they find the dead monsterman? " I said, being a bit worried that they would hurt the people here if they found out that we killed him. " They won't. Local authority's gonna be happy to have a new punchbag. " said Beryx. As quietly as possible, we left the place.

We picked up the dead monsterman and put him in the back of the military car. He was very heavy. We went back to the town. When we were about to part ways, Beryx gave us something. " Here, have this. I'm sure that once our Sergeant Major will get to know about a local monsterman operation, he would like to have a word with yours. " " This is... What is this? " I said, confused. " It's a mini radio. Others know it as a walkie talkie. Switch to 99.2 Hz. I'm sure that you will hear from us later. " And with that, they left. Me and Eduard got back into our car. " Do you have an idea how to operate this thing. " I said to Eduard, to which he responded with " Hell no. I haven't even heard of this before. " " Should we get back to the fort and report to the Sergeant Major? " " Yeah. That would be the best. " With that, we took off.
