Cora's POV
"And that's how their story ended. They didn't want it to end this way but fate had chosen a different path for them," I looked at Rose, she seemed happy. "The end."
Rose showed me a small smile. "What a wonderful story."
I smiled a bit and nodded slowly. "It is," I sighed. "It really is."
Rose frowned a bit, she seemed to think about something. "Why would fate chose bad paths for people?"
I looked down, it was so difficult to hear her speak like that. "That's a good question, Rose."
Rose looked at me. "Will we ever know the answer?"
"I don't know," I sighed deeply. "Maybe," I looked at her. "Would you like to know the answer?"
Rose nodded slowly.
"I hope you'll find that answer someday," I said which caused her to smile a bit. I had to smile too, seeing her happy made me happy. "Will you promise me one thing though?"
She nodded again.
"Will you tell me the answer too, when you find it?"
She nodded and smiled.
"Thank you."
We got silent then. The quietness almost felt comfortable. We had spent many moments in pure silence, we were both used to it. But spending a moment in silence in this place... It didn't feel right to me.
Before I could say anything, a nurse entered our room. "Hello Rose," She smiled at Rose. "How are we doing today?"
Rose smiled at her. "I'm doing fine," She pointed at me then. "She's telling me a story."
The nurse looked at me, then at Rose. "Do you know her name, Rose?"
Rose looked from the nurse to me. She frowned, trying to remember my name. It was obvious she had forgotten it once again. Even though I was used to it, it still hurt.
Rose looked at the nurse. "I don't," She looked down then. "I'm sorry."
The nurse looked at me, smiling apologetically. Then she looked at Rose. "It's ok," She patted Rose's shoulder. "One step at a time."
Rose nodded and the nurse left. She then looked at me. "I'm sorry I don't know your name," She gulped. "Could you tell me again?"
I swallowed my sadness as I really couldn't blame her. I forced a smile onto my face. "It's alright, Rose," I took her hand in mine. "My name is Cora," I kissed her hand. "I'm your wife."
Rose tilted her head to the side. "Cora..." She repeated. She seemed confused to hear my name, somehow I hoped hearing my name would trigger something. Unfortunately, it never really did... "I'll try my best to remember."
I forced yet another smile. "Thank you, Rose."
She nodded before looking away briefly. She then looked at me again. "Could I hear the story one more time?"
"Of course, Rose."
I turned my body towards Rose and made sure to give her all my attention. She was clearly eager to hear the story once more. She wanted to hear this story every day. And I was going to keep telling it to her. Because this story, was our story.
"Once upon a time, there was a girl, named Rose..."
