As the clouds rolled in I knew rain would be pouring. Sitting by the window I only wished it was over before class had ended. Although the teacher was nowhere to be seen the room was silent. It was almost eerie. I tapped my foot up and down and stopped at the sound of the door opening. Looking at the source I saw Mister Phillips. Slowly he made his way to his desk without a word.

I could hear the raindrops against the window and groaned in frustration. Looking down at my paper I had nothing to do so I settled with staying quiet. A word in this silence would be loud.

As I saw Mister Phillips stand up once more he cleared her throat for our attention, clapping his hands together he said, "I want those papers in by Monday, other than that you are all free to go."

With that he dismissed us and everyone started packing. Taking a look outside I knew the rain wouldn't stop anytime soon so started packing along with the rest of the class.

I felt a hand on my elbow and followed it up to see Cole. I couldn't quite place the expression written on his face as he looked at me. He stared out the window to where my eyes were moments ago. I smiled at him in what I hoped was a reassuring gesture but he didn't buy it.

"You've been quiet all day, what's wrong?" He asked, searching my face. For what? I wasn't sure. If I heard any concern in his tone I must have imagined it. We weren't close so there wasn't any real reason for him to worry. I shrugged my shoulders as though he might take that as an answer but he was relentless.

As my friends stayed back and waited for me I walked to where they were with Cole in tow, silent. I could feel his eyes on me and my heartbeat started racing. Nevertheless, I ignored the feeling and hugged them goodbye as they complained about the weather.

He stood back for a chance to speak but I wouldn't give him one as I walked out the door into the cold. The wind blew hard and I was doused in water the moment I walked out of the schoolhouse.

Immediately regretting the decision I continued to walk waving goodbye to my friends as I walked home. It became apparent to me that I didn't get Cole off my tail as he walked in stride beside me. He didn't say a word to my house only offering me his jacket for protection against the cold. I shook my head stubbornly and quickened my steps.

He didn't know the reason for my avoidance and he wouldn't for as long as I could hold the secret.

"I appreciate you walking me home, I'll see you Monday," I tell him expecting him to leave. One side of his lip curved up into a small smile and I furrowed my brows in confusion. What did he find so amusing?

"Those are the first words you've spoken to me today." I let out a sigh and didn't know what to tell him. I looked away from his eyes wondering what he was thinking. He was behaving unlike himself, he seemed for sure of himself. "Can I come in?"

Reluctantly doing so I stepped aside as I went to open the door. Inviting him in he smiled at me and I went to my room to clean up. I didn't hear his footsteps following after me and assumed he went to the parlor room.

Once I was dry I brought down some towels and walked into the parlor room. I saw as he was being tended to by my mother and he answered questions she was asking. Confused I walked over to them and at the sight of me they looked up stopping their talking. "Cole told me you're friends from school."

I nodded as I handed him the towels. I didn't bother denying her words as I took a seat across from them. As they spoke amongst themselves I looked between them. Narrowing my eyes at him he caught me in the act and I looked away.
