Chapter Two: Gandhi
Jake jumped off the ladder and hit the ground hard. He hasn't realized how far up he still was. He rubbed his backside and opened the forest green door that stood before him.
Jessica was already inside, taking every detail of the room in. The dirt trodden path, the packed earth that formed the room itself, the cluttered floor, the dim light, and the sixteen year old boy snoozing on a bed, unaware of his visitors. The stench of the room was overwhelming. Jessica plugged her nose to keep herself from gagging.
"Psst, Edward, wake up," Jake rocked the Dreamer awake.
"Jacob Prod, you better have a marvelous reason for waking me," the boy groaned.
"I had a dream," Jake mumbled.
Gandhi sat up straight, shaking the sleepiness from his emerald eyes. His black hair was ruffled and he wasn't wearing a shirt, something Jessica took notice of. He took a double take at Jessica and blushed crimson. "Miss Williams? Uh... May I ask wha-?"
"She needs to learn about dreams," Jake cut him off.
Gandhi cleared his throat and stood up, brushing dirt off his pants. "Dreams," he began, "What do you know about them?"
"They are like visions," Jessica replied, playing with her bracelet again.
"True, but they are more than that," Gandhi said, beginning to pace. "Everyone has dreams. Everyone. But they're not like ours. We Dreamers dream of one thing. The future, a future concerning ourselves. Now, our dreams aren't powerful unless we have a strong aroma surrounding us. Hence, the stink bomb called this room. You see, even with all our precautions, the strongest dreams we can have occur on our birth nights."
At this Jake coughed, cursing under his breath. Gandhi directed his stern glare towards Jake. "Jacob, tonight isn't your birth night... Right?"
"Um, well-" Jake blushed, flustered. Gandhi and Jessica's eyes flickered to Jake's bracelet which was blinking 'Birthday Boy!'
"I didn't notice that before," Jake muttered apologetically.
Gandhi's eyes flashed. He took a steady breath, sitting down on his bed. With a pencil and pad of paper in hand, he asked Jake, "What did you dream?" Jake gulped, recalling his dream. He explained how vivid it had been and how real the emotions were. Gandhi's eyes no longer held their mischievous sparkle that Jake had grown accustomed too.
Jessica put her head between her knees. She asked shakily, "What do you mean I said, 'I can't lose you too.' Who else did I lose?" Her voice cracked as she glanced at Jake. Her eyes, now the color of the sky when it was filled with the rising sun, were full of tears.
Jake shook his head, "I- I don't know..."
Jessica nodded, swallowing hard. Turning to Gandhi, she asked, "When will this happen?"
"That's the downside to our gift... We don't know." Gandhi had gone pale, something Jake had never seen.
The trio sat in silence, each wondering what had happened before the vision that would have them dreading it. Then they bell calling everyone to wake up rang, and they heard, "Gooooood morning Camp Wright! It seems that Miss Williams was going to let you all sleep in! Well, no. Because it's time to get up and start on our daily activities! Cabins Two, Three, Four, Five and Six shall be using the training center today. Cabins Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten and Eleven will be in the Potions Room. Cabins Twelve, Thirteen, Fourteen, Fifteen and Sixteen will have the Archery Field and the Fort. And Cabins Seventeen, Eighteen and Nineteen have the rest of the camp to wander about.
"Lucky Cabin Nine has clean up duty after meals today. And remember that we have a clean cabin check scheduled after dinner. Have a lovely Wednesday, folks!"
Jessica couldn't help but smile, "Elizabeth."
"Elizabeth Angle? From Cabin Two?" Jake asked.
"She's my right hand man, helps me when I slack off. And now she'll be saving the camp..." Jessica nodded with no enthusiasm. The three of them yawned and began to climb the ladder to leave, Gandhi throwing on a shirt quickly. Jessica was climbing because she was to tired to fly. They climbed out of the hole, each more tired then the next. Jessica grimaced at Gandhi and Jake then left, heading for Cabin One.
Tiffany, a spunky girl with green eyes and auburn hair, bounced over to Gandhi and Jake. She was already dressed in the Cabin Wright t-shirt and a pair of short shorts. Her shirt was a forest green, like all of Cabin Eleven's things, such as their comforters, rugs and eyes. "What was Jessica doing here?" She asked Gandhi.
"Tiff, I'm not in the mood and answer stupid questions. Go clean the cabin." Gandhi responded heatedly. Tiffany rolled her eyes sassily, but walked away, leaving Jake and Gandhi alone in the back of the cabin.
