Chapter Six: The Nemesis
The camp was dead silent, focusing on the paper in Jake's shaking hands. The older campers appeared to be in shock. The younger didn't seem to know what to make of the letter. Jake certainly didn't. He had read the letter over four more times in his mind, but he could make so sense of it.
Jessica, on the other hand, took six deep steadying breaths, then stretched out her palm. She shook it impatiently, waiting for Jake to place the letter in it. He stepped back, holding the thick paper to his chest protectively.
"Who's D?" He demanded.
The campers' attention shifted over to Jessica, whose cheeks flushed under their stares. She didn't wipe away the tears that were trailing down her face, nor did she acknowledge her sister's still warm body. She continued to hold out her hand, her night sky eyes glaring at Jake full force.
"Give me that note, boy," she said slowly, making sure her voice echoed through the trees.
"Who is D?" Jake repeated, taking another step backwards.
"Jake, this can be discussed at a later time-"
"A girl is dead, Jessica! One of your campers, your sister! And yet, you stand there and deny us the right to know who her murderer is!" Jake began to pace, his own eyes welling up with tears. He was frustrated at Jessica, at her way of running the camp and most importantly this D.
This seemed to make Jessica think. Her arm dropped to her side, and she used her sleeve to wipe her face. She was a pretty crier, Jake had to admit. "D... Demortalie... He is our camp's rival. No, rival does not suit him... Enemy, I think would be better. Demortalie was an Impossible himself. He attended the camp, went through the process all of you are going through now. He was well loved by the camp director then and was highly praised. Gifted, they called him," she chuckled darkly.
"But when he left the camp, he was no longer sure of himself. Where some used their powers for good, Superman, Captain America and the like, Demortalie found himself a theif and murderer. Soon, he grew tired of how easy he caught mere humans. He decided to settle on more evasive prey."
"The camp..." Jake muttered. This sent a shiver throughout the younger campers. The older seemed sadly resigned, each whispering of a tradgedy that had occured during their many years there.
Jessica nodded, walking over to Beth and closing her eyes. She kissed her forehead gently, giving Alex a hug. Jake watched her with a new sense of admiration. She handled Beth's death so calmly.
"So what do we do about it?" Jake asked, crumpling the note in his hand in fear.
Jessica stood up tall, facing her camp of super-human children. She seemed to gain more and more confidence as she took in their despair. She made her hands into fists, curling them and uncurling them as she contemplated her options. Then her gaze rested on her younger brother. Her eyes blazed with a feiry anger. She would not let anything happen to him.
"We fight back."
