Chapter Seven: Alex

Jake couldn't remember going to bed. Nor could he remember changing, or Alex coming into the room. Yet, he awoke to find himself in bed, without a shirt or pants on, and Alex sitting awake and red-eyed on the bed across from him.

"Alex...?" Jake sat up, allowing his toes to gently scrape the dusty floor. Alex made no notion of hearing him. He remained hunched over, unresponsive. There was a look of indescribable pain on his face.

Jake began to think of comforting things to say, but his voice caught in his throat. Alex's pain had shaken Jake more than he had realized. His heart ached for him. How could Demortalie be so cruel? Beth was gone and she would never come back. She would never laugh, smile or love Alex again. And Jake knew it was killing Alex inside.

Jake rose from the bunk bed. The walk across the messy room seemed long, as he made his way towards Alex. Alex still didn't move. He only stared down at his toes, sniffling occasionally.

Jake sat down beside his best friend. He gently patted his back, letting him know he was there. Alex watched his feet, a tear falling off the edge of his nose and onto the floor. Jake averted his eyes and they both stared downward in silence, thinking of happier times.
