Kaneki didn’t sleep that night, he just laid in bed for hours, his eyes wide open while he stared at the sealing. Words swirled around in his head as the dark seemed to envelop him.
Touka… Anteiku… Hide…
He turned over in bed, his ghoul eyes flashing in the darkness. A memory flashed of Jason, holding a centipede in front of Kaneki’s face.
He sat up with a gasp and tried to slow his ragged breathing.
“O-oneechan…?” Hinami’s voice said from the door.
Kaneki looked over, not able to see her in the dark. He flicked on the lamp on the table next to his bed and looked at her, her eyes squinting together at the sudden light. “What is it, Hina-chan?” he asked, running a hand through his hair.
She was hugging a pillow and quietly walked to Kaneki’s bed with it. “I-I had another nightmare…” she said. “And Banjou said he was to tired to talk about it…” she said, her face half covered by the pillow.
“What did Tsukiyama-sama say?” Kaneki asked, moving to the edge of the bed so Hinami could crawl up.
“He didn’t wake up.” She said, getting up on the bed next to Kaneki.
Kaneki looked out the door, seeing his friends slight shadows. “What happened in your nightmare?” he asked Hinami.
She snuggled in next to him, her head resting on his arm. “The humans burned Anteiku…” she said. “And killed everyone…”
Kaneki stroked her hair a little, a feeling of uneasiness spreading through his chest. “You know everyone at Anteiku is to strong to be killed my humans.” He said, trying to make her feel better.
She flinched a little, moving so he couldn’t see her eyes. “So mommy… wasn’t strong…?” she asked.
“No. Mommy was strong.” Kaneki said, his thumb moving back and forth on her forehead. “It was my fault.” He said.
Hinami shook her head. “No…” she said. “It was that dove’s fault… but I killed him…” she said, plainly, like she hadn’t killed someone.
Kaneki looked down at her, knowing her little eyes had seen too much for her age. “Get some sleep.” He said. “Maybe… maybe tomorrow I’ll take you to see Touka.” He said.
Hinami looked up at him. “Promise?” she said.
“Promise.”
She sat up. “But you have to come too.” She said.
Kaneki paused, thinking for a moment. “Okay…” he said. “But now you have to sleep.” He said and she nodded.
“You too, Onee-chan.” She said.
“Okay.” He said. He laid down and she cuddled up next to him. Her face was pressed into his chest with one arm hold her head up, like a pillow, and the hand on her back. “How’s that, Hina-chan?” he asked.
She nodded, beginning to drift off. “Mommy… used to hold me like this… and Daddy…” She fell asleep and Kaneki smiled down at her.
“Sweet dreams…” he said.
He turned the light off and laid his head down, his eyes still on Hinami, making sure she was okay. His eyes closed and he began to slip off just as someone whispered into the darkness.
“Kaneki-kun. It’s time to go.” It was Tsukiyama.
“Okay.” Kaneki said. Kaneki gently moved away from Hinami, trying not to wake her. He tucked the blanket around her, hoping she wouldn’t-
“Onee…chan?” she said sleepily.
He mentally slapped himself for not being more quiet. “Yes… Hina-chan?” he asked.
“Where are you going?” she asked, sitting up. Her dark ghoul eyes glowed a little in the dark.
“We’re going to see some people.” He said. He bit his lip. By ‘seeing people’, he meant they were going to kill ghouls, one’s that massacred humans. They were going to go to the Ghoul Restaurant.
She pulled the blanket off of herself. “I’m coming too.” She said.
“No.” Tsukiyama said. “You’ll stay here, Hina-chan.” He said.
She clicked on the lamp and stood up, rubbing one eye. They slowly changed back to human and she looked up at Tsukiyama. “I’m coming.” She said.
“Hina-chan… you really should stay-“ Kaneki started and was cut off as she walked out of the room to get dressed. “Hinami!” he said.
She walked into the living room and saw that everyone else was awake. “You guys… leave me here all alone?” she asked.
One of Banjou’s friends shook their head. “No. I usually stay.” He said.
She huffed and walked to her room, locking the door. They all stood, waiting, trying to think of some way to keep her at the house.
“Hinami-“ Kaneki began as she walked out of her room, dressed in one of her short dressed with flowers on it.
“Hinami.” Banjou said. “I really think that you should stay here. If we go, and we’re not going to just talk to ghouls, there’s bad ghouls, and the Doves might come too-“
Hinami turned to him, her eyes dark and a little scary, not looking like they belonged to a little girl. “I’ve killed a dove. And that’s one more than you’ve killed, Banjou-san.”
Banjou was quiet, thinking, then Kaneki started laughing.
Tsukiyama looked from Kaneki to Hinami, who’s serious heir had broken, then back to the laughing Kaneki. Tsukiyama put a hand to his face, sighing loudly. “Mon seigneur... (My lord…)” he whispered under his breath and shook his head.
Kaneki put a hand on Hinami’s head, his black fingernails glinting in the dimmed lights. “If you really want to come.” He smiled. “But you have to promise to run if I tell you.” He said.
She smiled and nodded. “O-okay!” she said.
