What is the most important thing to anyone? For some, it might be success, wealth, or power. For others, it could be family or freedom. But for Yiyi, love was the most important thing. It was the only thing she had once, and perhaps, the only thing she still clung to deep in her heart.Yiyi was one of those rare souls with a simple and kind heart. She was someone you could trust, someone you could lean on. She lived quietly, though her life was anything but simple.
"Yiyi, where are you?" a familiar voice called out.
Yiyi turned her head slightly, looking over the balcony railing. "In the balcony," she replied calmly, her gaze lingering on the horizon.
Moments later, her best friend Momo appeared beside her, arms crossed and clearly irritated. "What's wrong with you? I've been calling since last night, and you're not answering!" Yiyi's lips curved into a faint smile. "Sorry, Momo. I had my phone on silent and didn't notice." Momo and Yiyi had been inseparable since birth. They were more than best friends; they were sisters in spirit, though their lives couldn't have been more different. "Fine, apology accepted!" Momo snapped, though the annoyance lingered in her tone. Yiyi knew her friend too well. Momo wasn't the type to stay upset for long, especially if there was food involved. "How about we go eat shaved ice?" Yiyi suggested, her voice gentle. In an instant, Momo's expression brightened, her irritation melting away. She looked like a child who had just spotted a magical creature. "Yes! Let's go!"
The two made their way to their favorite dessert parlor, a place they'd visited countless times. As they sat down, savoring their icy treats, a man approached them. "May I have your phone number?" he asked, his voice confident. Without hesitation, Momo raised her hand and pointed to her ring finger. "Sorry, I'm already engaged." The man, clearly disappointed, left as quickly as he came. Yiyi looked at her friend, her brow furrowed in confusion. "Engaged? Since when? And to whom?" Momo grinned mischievously. "Yo, Babe, I'm engaged to myself." That was Momo—bold, cheeky, and utterly unapologetic. She had her fair share of admirers, and why not? She looked every bit the part of a billionaire's daughter, complete with an air of effortless charm and an unlimited credit card. But beneath the glamour, Momo was fiercely independent and determined to carve out her own path.
Yiyi, on the other hand, was the polar opposite. Her life was a mosaic of hardships. She had lost her mother at a young age and bore the stigma of being an illegitimate child. Her father's family had shunned her, unwilling to accept her into their wealthy fold. Her father had tried to help, but his family's threats had forced him to stay away. He had married into wealth and become a billionaire overnight.
Ironically, her father was best friends with Momo's dad. Yet, neither man knew their daughters were best friends too. Yiyi's mother and Momo's mother had met in a maternity ward and formed a bond that lasted until Yiyi's mother passed away. After that, Momo's mother, Yishen, took Yiyi in, treating her as one of her own.
But Yiyi had her pride. She didn't want to be a charity case, nor did she want any connection to her father's world. At 18, she left Momo's house and began living independently. Momo, being the fiercely loyal friend she was, stayed close by, ensuring Yiyi never felt truly alone.
"Okay, but seriously, when are you going to stop telling people you're engaged?" Yiyi teased as they ate.
"Not until I find my prince," Momo replied, her grin widening.
"Hmm, that might take a while. Why not just marry whoever Uncle Yi Lan picks for you?" Momo's eyes widened in mock horror. "Are you kidding me? If I marry someone my father chooses, I'll have two jobs—running the company and playing housewife. No thanks!" Yiyi laughed softly. "You're being dramatic. Anyway, I won't be able to meet you next week. I'm going to New York for work." "Wow! Can I come with you? I'll be bored without you." "It's a work trip, not a vacation, Momo," Yiyi replied, shaking her head. "But I *need* a vacation! And who knows, I might find a boyfriend there," Momo said, winking playfully. Yiyi groaned. "Oh God, not this again." They finished their desserts, the air between them light and full of laughter. Momo dropped Yiyi off at her place before heading home. As she parked her car in her driveway, Momo froze. Someone was standing at her front door—a figure she hadn't seen in a long time. "When did you get back?" Momo asked, her voice steady despite the shock coursing through her.
