They ran and then they walked, until they reached the convenience store that was near the bus station. Kalani bought coffee and offered one to Chloe, the two sat at the bus stop that's now close.
"Don Alberto sent me." Kalani said.
"Who's Don Alberto?"
"Let's just say he is my benefactor."
"Why?" Chloe questioned.
"All I know is, my boss shows an interest in the safety of you and your friends. He sent people to watch over you, but seeing that you've been looking for trouble, he assigned me to keep you out of danger specifically."
"I don't need protection." Chloe stood up.
"I can see that!" Kalani rubbing her throat. "But that doesn't mean you should be looking for trouble!"
"How old are you?"
"I'm eighteen."
Kalani stood up, displaying her height over Chloe, but still met by the doubtful eyes from the younger girl.
"One doesn't reach eighteen if you're weak in El Centro."
"You can go home now." Chloe turned and walked away. "Please send my thanks to Don Alberto."
"I know where you live!"
Chloe stopped, turned back and walked up to the tall girl, her eyes narrowed.
"Was that a threat?"
"No. I can drive you home. The last bus was gone and I have a car." Kalani saw Chloe hesitated. "Who did you think protecting you all these time? That creep at the gas station? The gang that was harassing at the playground?"
Chloe blinked, she has been following her.
"Yeah, did you think it was that easy? I was the one took down the second wave for you."
"Why were you never showed up?"
"Because I was told not to."
"By Don Alberto?"
"Yes, so it would not like he interferes with your life."
Chloe nodded, still coping with this new person that was to protect her.
"Where do you live?" Chloe asked.
"Why?"
"Because I prefer to know where I can find my bodyguard."
