I hear a voice.
'Woah, is that a wolf? Mr Stark? I thought Thor and Loki were coming? Where'd you get the wolf? Wait, is it Loki?'
Irritated, I open an eye, and the voice shrieks.
'Oh crap! Mr Stark, I swear, it looks like it's going to eat me!'
Slowly, I stretch, yawning and showing my razor sharp teeth, then Shift back.
'Hi, kid,' I say, looking over at the teenager who gapes at me. I guess it isn't every day you see a huge black wolf turn into a human. 'You aren't one of the three little pigs, so you should be fine.'
'Uh,' he gapes.
'For your information, I'm around half Asgardian wolf,' I tell him. 'Name's Minka Williams.'
'Peter P - Parker,' he replies. 'Uh, I mean Spiderman. Are Loki and Thor coming?'
'Yeah,' I say. 'Sometime today.'
'How'd you get like that?' He asks eagerly.
Tony walks in.
'Now, Peter, you can't be a wolf and a spider.'
Peter nods, eyes still fixed on me.
'Can you do it again?'
Obligingly, I Shift, and he gasps in awe. It's nice that for once someone isn't looking at me in fear, it's in admiration. I had no idea Spiderman was so young, but I guess you learn new things every day.
'Alright, kid,' Tony says. 'You didn't come here to stare at Minka, you came to visit Thor and Loki, right?'
'Yeah,' he replies, looking over at Tony. 'That's right, Mr Stark.'
'They'll be here any minute.'
He's right. Thunder crackles in the sky, and my ears go back in discomfort on how loud the sound is in my ears. Thor appears in the middle of the floor, and a small green ripple flickers, and then Loki stands beside him. Thor glances over at me, and his face twists in horror. I don't have time to move before his hands wrap around my throat, and he lifts me up. I choke as he cuts my air off, and he tightens his grip. My eyes start blurring and rolling back in my skull. Black spots over my vision, and I feel myself starting to go limp, when a voice yells.
'Stop!'
I'm released, and I crumple to the floor, gasping. I Shift and just lie there, trying to get enough air into my lungs. My eyes focus, and I see Bucky, standing in front of Thor, shielding me, the rest of the Avengers just staring, completely shocked.
'She's not dangerous,' Bucky growls.
'That's my sister's wolf. It's a monster.'
'No she is not!' Bucky snaps. 'See for yourself.'
I raise my head and immediately regret it as the inside of my skull aches, my heart pounding in my ears. No one moves apart from Bucky. Gently, he scoops me up and carries me to the sofa. My fist bunches the back of his T - shirt up, and my forehead rests lightly against his chest, flooding me with his comforting, glorious scent. Carefully, he reaches back and eases my fingers open, so he can go and grab me a drink. I just slump there, wondering why the hell I was just strangled by an angry god and why he thought I was his sister's wolf. The room explodes into a mess of panicked conversation, but all I hear is my ragged, shallow breaths. Bucky comes over and tips my head back with his flesh hand, wary of touching the spots where my neck is already going red, trickling some water onto my tongue. It hurts to swallow, but I do so anyway. Weakly, I cough, then push him away so I can sit up.
'Thanks, Buck,' I say softly. He nods and sits down on the sofa beside me, and I sigh.
Loki walks over, a slight smirk on his face.
'I'll have to apologize for my brother. He's convinced you're our sister Hela's wolf. She's the goddess of death. He lost his eye because of her, actually.' He chuckles, then goes quiet. 'How did you become like that?'
'I don't know. I guess HYDRA merged me with an Asgardian wolf.'
'Ah,' he says. 'HYDRA. So I assume you were as brainwashed as your little metal armed friend here?'
Bucky makes a sound of protest, but I nod. Loki laughs at him, and he bristles.
'Well,' the god of mischief says. 'Welcome to the Avengers.'
Thor looks over at me.
'She's a monster. It doesn't matter if she isn't my sister's wolf. You'll see. Asgardian wolves are killers. All of them. I know. I've been hunted by a pack. Although I killed all of them, they're still dangerous.'
I open my mouth to throw something back at him, but Bucky reaches out and puts a steadying hand on my shoulder, and I shut up.
'You leave her alone,' he snaps, and the tone in his voice, although dangerous, comforts the shit out of me.
I wonder what I would have said in reply if it weren't for Bucky. Would it have reinforced Thor's judgement on me? Silently, I glance over at the mysterious man beside me, and I thank him with my eyes. Thank him for stopping me from saying something I'd regret.

'You're a monster,' they whisper, in my ears, dead eyes glassy, fixed on me. 'Monster.' My heart pounds, and I back away as they start to move toward me, their feet, stiff with death, shuffling over the concrete ground of the cell.
'I'm not!' I yell, trying to drown out the awful words. 'I am not!'
'You are,' they murmur, but still they drown out everything else. 'Monster.'
They close in, all the people I've killed, chanting, their blood staining their clothes. Cold hands grab at me as I turn and run from them as fast as I can, but I'm too slow, and the air around me is like honey. Choking, I try and push through, and the hands grab me, pulling me down -
My eyes snap open, and I stare up at the ceiling, fists clenched in the sweat soaked sheets. Monster. Monster. Monster. Sighing, I give in and slip my hand into my draw and pick something out. I bury my face in Bucky's hoodie, breathing in that calming scent. I hug it to my chest and close my eyes. Just as I'm about to fall asleep, I hear Thor's voice. She's a monster. You'll see. Shivering, I pull on Bucky's hoodie and let it warm me for a second. Standing, I throw off the covers and pad through the corridors. The lift beeps as it goes up a level, and I open the door to Tony's office. The key to the draw with the files is in the lock. I open it and my hands hover over the files. All the Avengers' lives, in these neat files. I spot one under 'W'. Williams. Out of curiosity, I pick it out and open it. Nothing inside. Yet.
Slowly, I replace my file and pick out one labelled Barnes. My heart flutters slightly, and I bite my lip. Closing the draw, I hug his file to my chest and slip back to my bedroom. I curl up on my bed and flick through, when I find something that makes me stop. Pictures of him, in the HYDRA base. But that's not makes me stop. It's the small, grainy picture at the bottom, of him in a cell, his arms wrapped around a dark haired woman, her face buried in his chest.
'What the - ' I mutter.
You can't see her face, but I know exactly who it is.
It's me.
