Between 1942 and 1945, America was at war with Germany and Japan and was in a race to develop the atom bomb before its enemies.
It was code named the Manhattan Project and it was one of the largest engineering projects in history. Tens of thousands of physicists, chemists, metallurgists, engineers, designers and construction workers built an entirely new industry in America. It was one of the most significant events of the past century.
Costing more than two billion (1941) dollars and completed from scratch in three years, while engineers and physicists were still figuring out how it could be done, and even if it were possible. It was as large as the US automobile industry.
The purpose was to make atomic bombs and end the second world war before Germany could produce them. Germany, Russia and Japan all had atomic weapon programs during the war but only the USA, with assistance from British, Canadian and European scientists, was able to finance and manage the vast engineering project.
However, there were peaceful uses for nuclear technology. Radiation machines to treat cancer, radio-pharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine and power generation.
Unfortunately the images of nuclear bomb explosions and the legacy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and three major nuclear reactor accidents have tarnished the reputation of nuclear energy as a source of clean energy.
It took only three years to develop the atom bomb but the science behind this began more than a century earlier.
