August 19

Lyles POV
Mom comes down the stairs, stopping near the end. "Where were you?"

"The mall," I respond, looking at her.

"The plans have changed. We are going fishing tonight."

"What are you talking about? It's gonna be freezing out at night." I state.

"It's your father's decision. He's working late."

She walks back up the stairs, and Erik and I start walking.

"No... They are going to kill us and toss us overboard." I speak, beginning to worry about our safety.

"There's going to be a captain there," Erik says, trying to think open-mindedly.

"Maybe he's in on it."

That night

We watch our father beat the fish, having blood splatter everywhere and onto him. This gives me the sense that we will be his fish. His bait. He laughs out in the dark, calm waters. Maybe I would rather jump in the water than be on this boat with him.

Lyle's POV

Erik and I approach our father in the living room that night, where everything changed.

"We are going to the movies," I tell.

"You are not going anywhere tonight. Erik goes to your room. I need to talk to your brother."

I turn to Erik. "Don't listen to him." I turn back at dad. "We are going to the movies."

"Lyle..." Erik says, getting cut off.

Dad walks up to me. "Erik, go to your room! Now!"

He leaves in a rush.

"Do you think anyone is going to believe your lies, Lyle? Hmm? You are just a spoiled brat. A petty thief. But for me, I am a success. People need me. You need me. You wouldn't even exist without me, boy."

My mom walks past me holding dessert in her hands. "What's going on?" She sits down, setting the sugar on the table.

"You know people make choices in this life, Lyle. Erik made his, and you made yours."

My mother butts in. "Lyle... You have destroyed this family." She says, laying her head on Dad's shoulder.

I walk away, trying to hold everything in.

"You are not going anywhere tonight! Do you hear me! Lyle!" Father yells.

I head into Erik's room, plopping on his bed. "It's going down tonight."

"He's not even letting us leave the house," Erik speaks, beginning to worry.

"We have to do this tonight. We have to act now." I get up, shutting the door. "Tonight."

"What about mom? We have to tell mom."

"Don't you get it, Erik? She's just bad as he is. She let this happened." I sit back on the bed. "You know it, and I know it. They are going to kill us tonight. It's us or them."
