'Ugh, how long left' I groan.
'Shut up Riley !' Lee snaps.
We've been walking for a few hours now stopping every now and then for toilet breaks and for snacks, oh and by snacks I mean berries and tinned tuna. It's not the worst thing once you get use to it. This jungle is covered in blackberry bushes so that's really good for us and Lee and I stocked up on tons of canned food when the war began. It doesn't feel like the end of the world only happened 2 weeks ago. I can remember it like it was yesterday.Me and Lee were fighting as usual, and what really annoys me is that I can't even remember what we were fighting about. Anyway, Dad was at work when all this happened and Mum was in the kitchen making my favourite dinner, Mac and Cheese. Mum's Mac and Cheese is always so good that it can make your mouth drool just by the smell of it. Me and Lee headed downstairs for dinner, I was really pissed at him so I avoided eye contact but when we walked into the kitchen Mum was not there. I was so confused, I turned around and looked at Lee and he just shrugged. We called out her name but that's when the pair of hands snatched me. Me and Lee were pushed into the laundry, I was so stunned but then I noticed that the pair of hands belonged to my Mum.
'Mum what the heck are you..'
'No time, just listen, I'm going to open this back door and you're both gonna run' she whispers.
'No, mum what's going on' I ask.
'Just trust me' she says. I had no idea what was going on but me and Lee did as we were told. Mum opened the back door and we ran, our backyard connects into the jungle so we headed that way, I turned around to see Mum slowly trailing behind us. I'm confused but that's when I see them. 4 men in riot gear fully armed with machine guns fire at my mother, I see the life go out of her eyes, she collapses to the ground. I try to scream but I choke on my own words. Lee pushes me behind a bush so that we cannot be seen by them. It was by far the worst moment of my life, thus explaining the venom brush. We stop at a small under-grove and Lee says that we can rest here for the night. It hasn't even occurred to me about sleeping. I haven't slept for a while because whenever I do the nightmares come to me. I hate nightmares, I have hated them ever since I was little and no matter what I do, they never go away, they continue to haunt me for the rest of eternity. I've learnt to accept it. It's gotten dark now, I look up at the starry night and see beauty. I've always found starry nights so beautiful, of course I have since I've been studying astronomy. I just find it so amazing how there are trillions among trillions of galaxies that we have never even dared to explore.
'Stop day dreaming' Lee grunted. 'Time to go to bed'.
'I think I'm a bit too old for a bed time' I hissed.
Lee laughs but his eyes tell me that he's serious. I find a nice comfy spot on the cushion like moss and rest there. I stay here lying on my some what of a bed, looking up towards the starry sky. Wondering what tomorrow will have in store for me.
