“I can’t believe that just happened,” Kiera says as we all get into her car, a red Pacifica.
She gets into the driver’s seat, I place myself next to her and Autumn sits behind us.
“Kasey, what were you thinking? Saying yes to Jacob like that? What if he, you know—” Kiera continues and I cut her off.
“I wasn’t thinking straight, I got tired of him begging, and the word yes just slipped out of my mouth. But this is it, our only date, one that I will not enjoy.” I say beginning to feel sick.
“Is the sleep over going to be cancelled now?” Autumn asks from behind and I shake my head.
“No, I’ll make sure he has me back within an hour and we can then start. Kiera, how long is your date?” I ask.
“About an hour,” she responds and I nod.
“Kasey,” Autumn starts. “What if he tries to mess with you…you could be in danger you know.”
I sigh and begin to feel even sicker. “Can we please not talk about this?” I ask and stare out the window.
“Alright,” Autumn says and keeps quiet.
“So, you guys excited for the sleep over?” Kiera cuts in through the silence.
I nod. “Sure, it’ll start around 8:00 though, so Autumn while Kiera and I are gone you could hang with my sister or something.”
“Sure,” Autumn mumbles.
Kiera takes a right and then squeals. “I can’t wait for my date with Roger!”
“Woo Hoo,” I mumble and pump my fist sarcastically.
“Oh lighten up, this is the first date I’ve had in a while,” Kiera says and rolls her eyes.
“Pay attention to the rode Kiera, stop talking,” Autumn says beginning to sound nervous.
I watch Kiera nod and she takes another turn.
It’s not long before Kiera starts blabbing her mouth again. This time her topic is makeup and I tune her out as I look out the window.
I look at the radio and turn it on and the song “I Knew you were Trouble” by Taylor Swift comes on and I hear Kiera and Autumn scream.
I decide to sing along and they join it. “Once upon a time, a few mistakes ago, I was in your sights, you got me alone. You found me, you found me, you found me-e-e-e-e, I guess you didn’t care, and I guess I liked that, and when I fell hard, you took a step back, without me, without me, without me-e-e-e! and he was long gone, when he’s next to me, and I realize, the blame is on me, 'Cause I knew you were trouble when you walked in, so shame on me now, flew me to places I'd never been, 'til you put me down, oh, I knew you were trouble when you walked in, so shame on me now, flew me to places I'd never been, now I'm lying on the cold hard ground! Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble, oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble,” we all chant out and begin laughing.
We continue singing the rest of the song while Autumn and I dance and Kiera slowly drives down the road.
As the song ends I turn off the radio and lean back in my seat.
“I still can’t believe you said yes to Jacob, what were you thinking?” Kiera asks.
I shoot up, sitting straight and look at her as her eyes are glued to the road. “What?”
