Last time I've discussed about the negative sentence pattern using 不 and 没。This time let's tall about how to use 都 and 也!
OK,let's dive in! ε٩(๑> ₃ <)۶ з
The adverb 都 for "all"
In English, we use "all" in front of the subject as in "All Chinese". But in Chinese, the adverb 都,meaning "all", comes after the subject and before the verb phrase. So the pattern is
Subject + 都 + VP
中国人 都 要 我。
All Chinese want me.The adverb 都 for "both"
In Chinese, there is no special word like "both" like in English. Instead they just use 都。We can use 都 for any number which is greater than one. So the pattern is literally the same with 都 as "all" pattern. In the subject place, you can mention the name of two people or use the two of us "我们 两个"。
Subject + 都 + VP
我 和 我弟弟 都 喜欢 巧克力。
Both me and my brother like chocolate.
我们两个 都 喜欢 巧克力。
Both of us like chocolate. For negative case…
Chinese doesn't also have "neither/nor" for negative case. Just use 都 and make the sentence negtive by adding the negative words like 不,没,etc. The pattern is
Subject + 都 + Negative word + VP
我们 两个 都 不要 咖啡。
None of us wants coffee.
他们 都 没有 钱。
None of us has money. The adverb 也 for "also/too"
This 也 also comes after the subject and before the verb. The pattern is
Subject + 也 + Verb/VP
妈妈 也 要 咖啡。
Mom also wants coffee. We can also use 也 with the meaning of "too". But we need to aware that, we can't place the 也 at the end of the sentence as in placing the "too" at the end of sentence in English. Look at the following examples.
I also like novels.
我 也 喜欢 小说。✔️
I like novels too.
我 喜欢 小说 也。✖️For negative case…
For the negative case, just add the negative words after the 也 as usual. The pattern is
Subject + 也 + Negative word + Verb/VP
我 也 不要 叉子。
I don't need a fork either.The adverb 也 with adjectives
也 can also use with adjectives too. But make sure to add 很 in front of adjective first and then combine with 也。The pattern is
Subject + 也 + Adverb + Adjective
你 也 很 帅。
You're also handsome. The adverb 也 for "me too"
You can also use 也 for the expression "me too". Here, 也 goes with the verb 是 or you can just repeat the verb you're talking as kn the following examples.
我 是 中国人。
I am Chinese.
我 也 是。
Me too. (I am too.)我 喜欢 看 小说。
I like to read novels.
我 也 喜欢。/ 我 也 是。
So do I. (Me too.)
