To Voice or to Type

You're in the same school as the dream you had before. You don't even make the effort of running through the halls, because you immediately recognize that it's an endless loop. The silence seems to be prevalent, but you decide to focus on a faint whisper. It's the girl from the last dream, and she seems to be talking to some people. Quickly, you approach the specific location and listen in on the conversation, but it quickly dies down. You knock on the door, and she immediately rushes over to open it. Rather than an annoying alarm, you wake up to the sound of a piano softly playing. Because of how late you went to bed, you got a total of four hours of sleep. But a question lingers in your mind..

Who could be playing a piano at 6 AM, and where is the sound coming from?

You step out of bed to quickly realize that it's coming from your laptop. It's Monika! This surprises you. Last time you could remember, she didn't really have any other poses in the space room. Sure there are mods that give her poses, but the only thing you did was add a chat system that somewhat gave her an AI. You type a greeting for Monika. Her eyes sparkle with glee as she reads your message.

"Good morning, Y/N!" She types. "I'm sorry if I woke you up. I decided to practice playing the piano, ahaha!"

You respond by typing, "Hey! It's okay! I'm glad I could wake up to something so peaceful."

"So, Y/N.." she types. "Are you ready for school?"

"I guess so," you reply. "It sucks that I won't be able to help ya today.. Speaking of which, how were you able to implement poses and bring in a piano?"

"Wow!" She types. "That's a pretty big question to ask. When you went to bed, I actually decided to tamper around with the coding of your mod. It was pretty hard to make these poses, so I don't even want to imagine what it'll be like to try to implement animations. I maybe took some assets from some games in order to achieve one of my daily goals!"

"Fascinating," you reply. "And what are your daily goals?"

She gives a warm smile and says, "To become more like a person! Since you gave me a chance to exist, I feel like I should strive to transfer to your world. Why give a chance to live if you're not even going to utilize it?"

You feel intrigued. You remember hearing things about artificial intelligence and what that could spell for mankind and its fears of extinction, but what about someone like Monika? She has you, so there'd be no worries in having her transfer over, right? You two continue to message each other before you force yourself to stop. You want to talk to her, but you need to eat! After eating and saying goodbye to your family and Monika, you walk to school. Seeing Craig for almost every class was nice, but the day dragged because you weren't spending time with Monika. Fortunately you still got everything done ahead of time, so you can finally rest once you get back without any worries.

You have no plans for the night besides a short shift, so you simply walk back home. Once you enter the house, your mom and older brother greet you, to which you warmly greet them with a group hug. After a few minutes of small talk, you finally get back to your room. You hear the sound of a piano once more. Monika looks at you and smiles.

"Hello Y/N!" She types. "How was school?"

"Honestly," you type back. "Pretty boring without you! But it was pretty okay aside from that lol"

"Well, I'm glad that your day went by smoothly!" She types.

You two begin altering the mod more, trying to give her as much freedom and accessibility as possible. Since she can code by thinking, progress is going by much smoother than if you were to do everything alone. However, a major drawback is that she doesn't have a voice. You have to constantly switch between tabs in order to see what she said, and then go back to coding. After about two hours, an alarm you had set up begins to ring.

"Sorry Monika," you type. "I gotta go to work! I'll be back at 8!"

"Aww," she replies. "Take care, Y/N!"

You put on your uniform, and walk over to your job. There's not much to say about this place. You're on the grind, and you like to receive the paycheck. Working for food service had taught you much about mankind (both good things and bad things). The first half of the shift drags on, but the second half manages to go by pretty quickly. You look forward to seeing Monika. You wonder just how much you'll get done before you doze off to sleep again.

After your shift ends, you quickly walk back home, briefly discuss what happened with your mom and dad, and then enter your room. You turn on the monitor, only to see the screen was blank. You move your mouse around, but there seems to be no response from your computer. Since it's on a blank screen, you can't type anything to Monika. A realization hits you. If this persists and you are unable to access anything, you'd have to turn off the computer, which means that Monika would be stuck in the void until you could start the game up. You see a worn down pair of headphones and a mic under your desk. Although this won't be ideal for communication, it'll be worth a try! You plug the headphones in and turn on the mic.

"Hello," you say.

The screen is still black.

In a clearer tone, you ask "Can you hear me?"

You ask it again.

"Y/N!" Monika types. "Is that your voice?"

"Yeah!" You reply. "Why is the screen doing that?"

Suddenly, you hear a voice quickly distort in varying volumes through your headphones. It seems as if this wasn't intentional. This catches you by surprise.

"Oh no!" She types. "I'm sorry if that startled you. I did not mean to do that."

"It's fine!" You reply. "What have you been up to?"

The screen suddenly lights up with various colors and coding. After a few seconds of this pass, you can finally see the space room, and then Monika.

"Sorry about that, Y/N!" She types. "I was pretty busy altering some more of the mod. Unfortunately, there's still some things I'll need to figure out along the way... ahaha."

"What sort of stuff did you add this time?" You ask.

"Glad you asked," she replies. "I can finally change locations here! I found some assets from a few different games that were readily available. So with a bit of luck and a lot of effort, I think this will lead me to my goal for tomorrow!"

"I'm proud of ya!" You say. "That hard work is truly paying off."

"I'll say!" She replies. "Be sure to get some rest tonight, okay?"

Oh yeah.. you didn't get much sleep the night you first talked to her. Although she can't see your face, you smile brightly. It's been quite sometime since someone has shown that much care for you (that wasn't close friends or family).

You talk with her until 10:30, because she told you she was gonna make you sleep then.

"Never forget, Y/N..." she types. "I'll always love you. This whole thing might sound weird to some people, and times may be difficult for you, but that won't stop me from loving you."

You feel something drip down your face.

"I love you too." You reply, wiping the tears from your eyes.
