The faint sunlight shone down on Anya's sleeping face as the little kris shuffled under the rags. Her nose twitched as she realised that the air was dusty and stuffy.
Anya shot awake as she sneezed, realising that something was terribly wrong about her current location. The air of this place wasn't cool and fresh like that of her room. It smelled like a boiling combination of smoke, blood and dust.
'What the-' Anya looked around as she rubbed her eyes. She sneezed again and coughed a few times.
The kris took a quick look around. The wooden room she was in had many holes in the walls, the floor carpeted by a thick layer of dust. Sunlight poked through the dusty air as Anya's sudden movements sent clouds of dust all over the place.
Anya stumbled towards the wall and was surprised when it collapsed with a slight push.
'Huh?' Anya murmured as she looked around. 'Where in the world-'
And that was when she took in the full scene of the city ahead of her. Smoke rose from burning buildings as rubble littered the streets, with a few badly decayed bodies lying in dried up pools of blood here and there. Long, gloomy shadows cast down on gloomier alleys as the sun struggled to shine its light through the layers of clouds, smoke and ash.
Anya couldn't believe what she was seeing. Did she just turn back into her kris form without knowing and slept for another few centuries before her current waking?
'This is weird...... This is bad......' A small growl came from Anya's stomach as she stumbled across the street. 'Where is Reine when you need her to force-feed you watermelons......'
As Anya passed by a small alley, one of the larger pieces of rubble began to shudder. Anya stopped moving and looked in the direction of the movement.
'Hello?' Anya called out. 'Who's there?'
The zombie girl shot out from underneath the rubble and instantly grasped Anya's arm with her claw-like fingers.
'Brains!' The zombie shrieked as her heterochromatic eyes glowed red with bloodlust. 'Brain-'
'Ollie shut up!' Anya shouted as she punched the zombie in the face with her free hand. 'What the hell are you doing?!'
Ollie doubled back and shook her head, a confused growl escaping from her lips. 'A-Anya?' She stuttered, her voice drier and somewhat more strained than it used to be.
'Yeah. It's me. Anything else you forgot?'
Ollie's abnormal appearance was slightly disturbing Anya. The zombie's usual rat-eaten dress was swapped with a ragged, bloodstained jacket paired with torn jeans. Her hair was untied and seemed to be chopped at random intervals. Dark red blotches of dried liquid covered her hands and face as her short, raspy breaths filled the air nearby with the rusty smell of blood.
'Why the edginess?' Anya joked as her eyes darted from side to side in an attempt to seek the closest safe point possible.
'Anya- Anya- it can't-' Ollie's head looked like it was about to fly off at any second now due to how quickly she was shaking it. 'It's been- so long-'
'Where's Reine?'
Anya regretted asking that question a split second later.
Ollie stopped shaking her head, her madness-filled eyes staring at Anya as if she were prey. 'She's gone. Just like everyone else.'
'Everyone else?-'
'They're all gone, you hear me?!' Ollie pounced towards Anya, who barely jumped away in time. The crazy zombie reached for the sword strapped onto her back as she screamed away whilst trying to close in on Anya. 'Months had passed since the meteor crashed into the world and screwed everything up! I was forced to watch as people died here and there! Earthquakes, tsunamis- fun fact: being a zombie doesn't help with trying to keep people alive or trying to make myself die!'
Ollie trembled as her sword shook in her grasp. Anya stared fearfully into those feral eyes that were filled with an unfamiliar craziness.
'It's been such a long time since I last feasted on fresh flesh.' Ollie snarled as she charged forwards, her sword raised high in the air. 'Say hi to Calli-senpai for me!-'
Ollie nearly tripped herself when Anya reverted into her weapon form. The sword swung through empty air as Ollie stared at Anya's original location, confused and disoriented.
'Talking to Calli-senpai on a collab would be a much more preferable way to meet her than to just die.' Anya's voice sounded in Ollie's head.
'Where the hell?-'
'Down here. The kris. Just exactly how could you have forgotten about my powers already?'
Ollie looked around and finally spotted the dagger on the ground. The wavy brown-to-yellow blade with its purplish hilt glinted in the faint sunlight.
The red glow of bloodlust in Ollie's eyes faded away. 'You should've done that earlier.' The zombie groaned. 'After all this time of being alone, I'm less sane when I come across living, breathing flesh. A crow that landed next to me just a few days ago made me grab a few fire grenades from the deserted bunker nearby and...... Well, you're not blind. Those buildings are covered in flames.'
Anya would've nodded her head if she wasn't stuck in this immobile form. 'And what about Reine?'
Something else flashed in Ollie's eyes this time. It was pain.
'She's alive.' Ollie replied, her voice a mixture of fear, regret and anger. 'At least, the last time I saw her she was. That was just a week ago. Before that, she broke all communication with me and the other girls when the meteor-'
Ollie shook her head and stopped herself mid-sentence. 'Whatever it is, she's gone. Something snapped within her, and she's not the same anymore. Not a single one of us is the same anymore-'
'Take me to see Reine.'
Ollie stared at the kris with disbelief.
'Are- are you sure?'
'For Matsuri's sake, I've somehow found myself sleeping through an entire era of chaos.' Anya's voice was dotted with frustration. 'The last thing I remember before waking up was that I decided to take a nap back in my room in the office. Not a single memory of meteors or natural disasters or whatnot had been in my mind.
'Besides, you said that you saw Reine just a week ago. Surely she couldn't be far from here, right?'
Ollie looked like she was about to scream when the hesitation took over. Anya wondered just exactly what had caused the hyper and happy zombie everyone knew to change into the insecure being she currently was.
'Fine.' Ollie finally replied as she picked Anya up from the ground. 'I'll take you to see her. But here's a head start: the result isn't going to be very pretty.'
'Sounds weird when you're talking about that dork of a turkey who's trapped inside an elegant adult woman's body.'
A dry laughed coated with pain came from Ollie as she walked down the streets. 'Very funny. Now stay quiet or I might lose my way through these fallen buildings.'
'Okay.'
And thus the zombie girl strolled through the destroyed city, the curious kris staying silent as she took in the surroundings of this era of unknown.
(OH GOD THIS THING WAS SUPPOSED TO BE BASED ON A SMALL DREAM THAT ANYA TWEETED ABOUT BUT SOMEHOW I TURNED IT INTO AN EDGY STORY THAT I MIGHT ACCIDENTALLY TURN INTO A WHOLE DAMN BOOK IF I'M NOT CAREFUL ENOUGH-)
