Everyone Wanted to Kill Me

I fell back a few steps away and saw that Bucky changed his trajectory towards me. Why would he head towards me when Peter and MJ were right there?

"Kim, watch out!" Peter yelled, and my head snapped to the right, where I spotted a quinjet flying to us at high speed, and it seemed like it had no intention of slowing down. Its front lights were edging nearer and nearer to the building until I could almost see the person in the steering seat.

Okay, I've watched out, Peter. Now, what can I do about it? That's right, absolutely noth-

I raised my hands, and they glowed that same yellow as before.

Shuri really messed up with this device. That's what must be happening. Maybe she wired it wrong or something, but I'd have to talk to her about this as soon as I got out from here... speaking of which, how do I get out of here?

The quinjet smashed through the panes of glass, breaking through my thoughts and causing my heart to thrash in my chest, but past me remained calm and simply lifted her hands higher. A soft glow illuminated around the quinjet as it did a surprising harsh right turn, sending it right into more windows of glass and out of the building.

I dropped to my knees as soon as the light in my hands cut off.

"Thank you!" Peter yelled out. I looked back and saw that he was engaged in combat with Bucky. "Bucky, I know you're in there! Please don't fight against me."

A black mask covered Bucky's face. Peter's words did not deter Bucky at all. In fact, it almost seemed as if Bucky fought back harder.

What had Shuri talked about? Something about words that would kick him back into obedience... Could Hydra have regained control over him once more?

I snapped out of my thoughts when MJ dropped next to me and clutched my shoulder. Her brown hair was frizzy as she swept it out of her face. Her brown eyes tried to make contact with mine. "Are you okay, Kim? Your nose is bleeding."

I touched my nose and then withdrew my hand, seeing red mar my skin. Interesting. I could only see things in this body, but I couldn't actually register pain or feel the blood sticking to my fingers.

"I think you're approaching your limit for today. You've used your power too much, and you've only recently got it," MJ said, gripping my jaw gently and moving my head around so she could take a look at the bloody nose.

"What else am I supposed to do?" I asked, moving her hand away from me and baring my teeth. "If I don't push myself, we will die."

She opened her mouth to answer, but her eyes widened when they jumped towards the previously made hole to the left of me. "More are coming!"

I swallowed the lump at the back of my throat as I saw what she pointed out. A fleet of planes approached us, and even from a distance, I saw that awful symbol on the sides. Hydra had sent an army. I pushed myself to my feet. "Kim, no! You can't! You'll burn yourself out! You don't know what pushing yourself over the limit will do to you."

"It's not like we have another option!" I turned towards the fleet and lifted my palms. I whispered, "Protect. You've got to protect."

A brilliant white light shone from me.

I gasped, my eyes flying open. Part of me tried to walk immediately, so I fell right out of the chair and crumbled, hitting the cold hard ground. Adrenaline was rushing through me, begging me to run, fight, do something. I looked around the room and realized I was in Tony Stark's workshop, where Shuri and I set up the device earlier.

Blood pumped through my body as my heart raced. I got to my feet, trembling, and approached the device. The electrodes had fallen off when I jumped to my feet. I removed the earpieces and placed them on top of the device, jitters lacing through my body.
