Part 3: crazy mother

The next morning, Jessie takes breakfast with her sister, her father and her mother. She has already forgotten about the weird dream she had the day before.

They were watching something on the TV while eating when suddenly the show is interrupted by a news broadcast.

A woman is speaking : 'Yesterday, a rebellion started. It is assumed that there were teenagers involved. The culprits will be sent to jail or to a special boarding school, depending on their age. There are flyers being put everywhere and websites being hacked so they show the flyers. The government is taking a big effort to stop this action. Certain measures will be taken. There will be an hour a week where children will do some exercises to find out if they have powers or not. If the children do have powers, they shall from now on have training every day after school so they can have the honor to work for the government once they grow up. The parents will be rewarded for sending their children to training.'

Crap. Now Jessie defnitely can't tell her parents or her sister that she might or not have some kind of power. But what will she do if someone notices that she actually has a power ? Wait, maybe she actually doesn't have a power, she thought.

Jessie eats her cereals and as she looks at her mother, Anna, she notices that her mother is staring into her eyes. It feels like she is staring right into her soul. That's super creepy. Jessie notices that the iris of her mothers eyes are red. Didn't Nikky say that mother has been acting weird ? Jessie looks at her father and at Nikky, but they both seem to not notice anything.

'Have you been feeling something lately, Jessie ? Have you been feeling...powerful ?', Jessies mother suddenly asks.

'No, I haven't', Jessie answers, a bit too quickly and her voice higher than it should be. Does her mother suspect anything? Is her mother even alright? She's still staring at Jessie like she expected something special.

'Uh mother ? Everything alright?', Jessie asks, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

'Huh ? Yeah, everything alright.', Anne says, her eyes turning back to the usual blue color.

Jessie takes a closer look at his mother. What the heck is causing her eyes to change color? As much as Jessie hates her mother, she really doesn't need a crazy mother.

Jessie is looking for something out of the normal on her mother when she notices something on her ear. There's something that looks like a hearing aid. There's a button with a little red light. Weird. The last time Jessie checked, her mother never needed a hear aid...

'Well, I've gotta go to work now. Have a nice day.', Jessie's father, Frederick, says.

He gets up and dissapers with a poof. Jessies father is able to teletransport. That's a rare power and her father often has to go on some kind of missions for the government in the city. Jessie always wanted to know what all these missions are about...

After eating, Jessies mother goes to her own room and locks herself up.

'Hey Niks, what are you gonna do now ? It's week-end you know. We could do something together. Or maybe watch over our weird mother.' Jessie looks at Nikky, waiting for an answer.

'Don't call me Niks, you damn idiot! I don't wanna do anything, I'm tired since the party of yesterday. And why the heck would we watch over mom ?', Nikky says.

'Well, we should sometimes check on her, y'know, to see if she isn't being too weird.', Jessie explains.

'Pff, fine then.', Nikky sighs and sits on the sofa, 'Wanna watch something on Webflix?'

'Oh alright then. What so you wanna watch?', Jessie asks, sitting beside Nikky.

'Anything that isn't boring', Nikky answers, and turns the TV on.

Two hours pass and Jessie and Nikky decide to go check on their mother. They notice that the door is now unlocked and open it a little bit. Their mother, Anne, is standing in her room and she looks like she's out of her mind. She's staring at the ceiling and keeps on repeating the same phrase : 'I've gotta kill him. I've gotta kill him. I've gotta kill him...'

Jessie and Nikky share a look. Nikky looks terrified, her whole body shaking.

'Mom? Who do you have to kill?', Nikky asks, with sweat on her forehead.

Anne looks at Nikky and then we notice that something is off. Her eyes are red again and she suddenly screams 'GET OUT!' before slamming the door shut.

Nikky starts crying as Jessie is trying to calm her heartbeat. Jessie tries to calm Nikky down and after a few minutes, Nikky calms down.

'Lets just go back to the sofa...', Jessie says and tries to pull Nikky.

'NO! I wanna find out what is wrong with mom!' Nikky suddenly starts running towards mothers room.

'NIKKY WAIT!', Jessie yells, as she tries to reach and grab Nikky.
