Chapter Twenty-Nine

Flynn

“I have a girlfriend” Louis says.

I keep my face blank.

“Do you remember?” I ask, trying my best to keep the hope I'm feeling off of my face. I don't want him to feel like he's let me down if he didn't remember.

“No” he says, looking down at his lap. “I shouldn't have been looking, I know, but I saw this interview on YouTube about her.”

I sigh, leaning back against the couch and staring at the wall. I try my best not to look at him, I don't want him to see any disappointment in my eyes.

I wanted him to remember.

I still do.

“You're mad at me” he says, and I look at him to see his eyes, pleading.

Begging me to forgive him.

“I'm not mad” I say, and it's true. I'm not mad at him, I'm not disappointed with him, I just wish he had remembered things on his own. “I just kinda hoped you had remembered.”

“Would've been nice” he said, staring down at his lap again.

We both sit cross-legged on his couch, and the telly was on and now it isn't, because Louis said he wanted to tell me something.

“What am I supposed to do now?” he asks, his eyes meeting mine again. “I feel so bad, I was horrible to her. But neither of us knew. Not that that makes it any better.”

“She'll remember things eventually” I say. “Just like you will. And I'm sure she won't hold it against you.”

“What if we weren't dating anymore, though?” he asks, looking somewhat panicked.

“She was living with you” I reply.

He doesn't seem to hear me.

“I'll call Harry and ask” he says.

He reaches for his mobile, but I grab his hand to stop him.

“Don't” I say, when he looks at me with confusion written on his face. “Stop trying to find things out. Remember them.”

“I can't” he says, his voice cracking on the word 'can't'. “Nothing's there. All those years are just gone, Flynn.”

“You'll get them back” I say, even though I don't entirely believe it anymore. The doctors remain optimistic, but I think even they don't know why it's taking him so long.

“I've got that doctor's appointment later” he says. “Maybe they'll know things.”
